adobe premiere clip is glitching and squashed on playback when scale is changed

Issue: Clip is glitching and squashed on playback when scale of clip is changed. When I change playback to “full res” it plays fine, but the video still exports with the glitch.
Screen Recording: It is exactly what is happening to this person here: https://www.reddit.com/r/premiere/comments/1w5tcub/weird_playback_bug_when_i_scale_videos/
Premiere Version: 26.5.2
Operating System: MacOS Tahoe 26.6.2
Chip (Mac Only): Apple m3 Pro, 18GB memory
Video Format: .mov
Project Size: It happens in my project, and it happens when I start a new project with only a couple videos.

    Hi @sjb0788

Thanks for stopping by the Premiere forums and giving us those details about the glitch/squash footage. Ahh yes, this sounds like a familiar issue we had a little while back. I did see your link that refers back to this issue in that Reddit post, which confirms using the Full Resolution on playback workaround that helped prior. Noting though that your export is still showing up with the squash glitch despite playback looking as expected on Full.

I did take a quick screenshot where I see the glitch on that video below. Is that what your exported glitch also looks like?

Wondering if you had tried shift launching Premiere and letting it clear out cache and getting rid of old video previews, just in case that might have been interfering and retaining that in your export.

Maybe give us a quick rundown on the affected source clip’s frame size, frame rate, pixel aspect ratio and codec. Perhaps screenshot of Media Properties would do, along with the sequence settings and the clip’s Scale value/scaling method used.

    Follow up questions:
Does creating a new sequence by dragging that source clip onto the New Item icon change the export outcome?

Also, after rendering the affected range, does the squash/glitching remain in playback and export?

A short sample export and sample affected clip for us to try testing on our side would help show exactly where the distortion appears. I can DM you our private upload link for those and will send that now.

    Hope to help!
    Katie

Hi, thanks for reporting this with the version and system details. For a squeezed/squashed appearance during playback, the official troubleshooting steps are in Adobe's "Troubleshoot sequence and file-interpretation settings" guide — please work through them in order and test playback after each step:

    1. Work in a sequence whose settings match your imported files: in the Project panel, drag the clip to the New Item icon to create a new sequence with the appropriate resolution and frame rate that matches your source footage.

    2. Render previews of the clips on the timeline: select the timeline, then choose Sequence > Render In to Out.

    3. Adjust the scaling, pixel aspect ratio or field settings as applicable: if a clip appears squeezed too narrow or stretched too wide, correct the pixel aspect ratio by using the Interpret Footage command.

    Full guide: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/troubleshooting/playback-issues/troubleshoot-sequence-and-file-interpretation-settings.html

If the clip still plays incorrectly after each step, please let us know which step you tried and whether a sequence created from the clip itself (step 1) shows the same squashed playback.
