Adobe Premiere Pro Timeline will randomly stop working for my macbook trackpad. Cannot drag clips, zoom in and out on timeline, select clips, or even adjust settings in the effects panel

I use a macbook pro, with an apple m4 chip and 48gb of memory. I use Premiere Pro 26.3.0

I’ve been editing on a macbook for nearly 7 years and have only recently run into this issue. It seems to be a hardware problem being that the trackpad works perfects on every other function within the computer and online.

Essentially my trackpad will not work on the timeline after a certain amount of time working, usually 20-25 minutes. Clips will not drag, cannot edit clip times without using keyboard commands, cannot select clips, cannot zoom/move the bar on the timeline either.

Very frustrating and makes editing a nightmare

Hi @Will5E99

Thanks for stopping by the Premiere forums and including those details about your issue. I saw your additional comments about updating didn’t resolve it and that it’s spanning 30+ projects.

Some helpful questions to better help us troubleshoot:

  • Which version of macOS are you running?
  • Do you have the Logitech Premiere extension, a control-surface driver, or another Premiere-integrated utility installed?
    • If you temporarily disable or quit those, does the issue still occur? We have had a known case of this occurring with say a Logitech mouse extension.
  • When the trackpad stops responding in Premiere, does an external mouse also fail to select or drag items and does restarting Premiere resolve this?
  • What is the last Premiere version and build you remember working normally? If you’re unsure, did the issue begin after a specific Premiere or macOS update?

Sorry for any frustrations and hope to help!
Katie

I am running MacOS Tahoe V. 26.5.2. I do not have a Logitech premiere extension (I have never used any mouses/own any external mouses) and I have no plugins running or active. I used to have MAXON 4d but it is no longer installed.

The last premiere version I remember working 100% smoothly was pre-Febuaury 2026. I’m pretty diligent with updates so whatever version was active around this period. If I remember correctly it was right around or before PR introduced generative extend for audio tracks/video in essential sound, but I may be wrong. Most of these issues seem to follow adobes introduction of generative AI to PR

Projects will generally work for 15-20mins of opening, so restarting the program fixes the issue for a short period. It seems to start happening when the program is processing a large part of the timeline after a lot of editing and jumping around the timeline with edits/effects

problem occurs for audio, .mp4, shapes. pngs, ETC. Issue is not file dependent and exists across 30+ individual projects
