Bug in Premiere Pro 25.2 — Alpha Channel Not Displaying and Settings Unavailable
Dear Adobe Support Team,
I am writing to report a technical issue in Adobe Premiere Pro version 25.2 (updated on April 2, 2025). The alpha channel is not being displayed for files with transparency, and several critical settings are unavailable, which prevents me from working effectively. I would like to understand the cause of this issue, how it can be resolved, and whether the program’s new AI features can be tested under these conditions to evaluate its overall utility for my workflow.
Issue Description:
  1. Alpha Channel Not Displaying:
    • I imported a PNG file with a transparent background into Premiere Pro, but the transparency is not displayed (the background appears black).
    • The same issue occurs with MOV files exported from After Effects with an alpha channel (ProRes 4444, "RGB + Alpha" settings).
    • In DaVinci Resolve, the alpha channel in these files is displayed correctly, confirming that the issue is specific to Premiere Pro.
      1. Settings Unavailable:
        • The "Modify" option is missing from the right-click context menu for footage, so I cannot adjust alpha channel interpretation.
        • The renderer settings are unavailable (grayed out) in both "Project Settings" and "Edit → Preferences → General." It is set to "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA)" and cannot be changed.
      My System:
      • OS: Windows (fully updated).
      • GPU: NVIDIA (driver version 572.83, latest as of April 2025).
      • Premiere Pro Version: 25.2 (latest).
        Steps I’ve Taken:
        • I created a new project, but the issue persists.
        • I confirmed that the alpha channel is present in the files by checking them in DaVinci Resolve.
        • I attempted to adjust the renderer settings, but they are unavailable in all locations.
        • I also tried adjusting NVIDIA settings, but Premiere Pro is not recognized for optimization in NVIDIA Control Panel ("Program does not support optimization").
          Request:
          I would like Adobe to:
          1. Investigate and resolve the issue with the alpha channel not being displayed in PNG and MOV files.
          2. Address the unavailability of critical settings, such as the renderer and alpha channel interpretation.
          3. Provide guidance on how to test the new AI features in Premiere Pro 25.2 under these conditions, as I need to evaluate whether the program meets my workflow requirements or if I can rely on alternative software (e.g., DaVinci Resolve).
Please provide a timeline for when a fix will be available or explain the cause of this issue and how it can be resolved. I can provide sample PNG and MOV files for you to reproduce the problem if needed.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
          Best regards, Sergey Okhotnikov

Hi @sergejo73956991 -  Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.

I have checked in 25.2 and do see that transparency is working with files that have an alpha channel.

Can you try what Ann has suggested by holding down "SHIFT" while launching Premiere and check the boxes
"Reset app preferences" (Backup Preferences first)
"Clear media cache files"

Sorry for the frustration.

All images with transparancy in the timeline show with a black background.

Might want to turn on Transparancy grid to check the image.

Try resetting preferences and delete media cache.

see how that goes.

Render settings in the project settings have been reduced to cuda only in 25.2
