BUG REPORT - Premiere renaming MXFs on import

I am editing large amounts of student films into promo reels. When I import the films which have a very strict naming format, occasionally, some will show up in the project window with a different media name. It doesn't matter which method I use to import. I have tried ticking File Name in the Metadata but it makes no difference. I then have to find in Explorer (which it does no problem) and copy the file name across, but that's a ball ache.

I am using Premiere Pro 23.6.5 (build 2).

Windows 11 Education vers. 22H2

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz

16.0 GB RAM

GPU NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000

I am importing MXF files, saved as DNXHR OP1A. These are films that have been editing and exported from a variety of software (Mainly AVID, Premiere and DaVinci). I think that they were exported and renamed and they are loading with exported name (Untitled, Export 1 etc) and not the submitted title.

I have tried to recreate this by changing the name but it imports with the new name and not the original, so basically I am unable to recreate this.

The steps I followed are...

1. Find file via Media Browser

2. Right click>Import

3. See file imported in project window BUT a number of files have an incorrect title.

If you right click and view properties, the name is incorrect but the pathname is correct.

If you right click and Reveal in Explorer, it is correct.

It is an occasional error but with the volume of work I am dealing with, it means finding clips is problematic.

I suppose it's possible , but since the current behavior is also the result of a feature request, we'd have to weigh that carefully.

I've found what I think is the source of the issue you're seeing....

In Resolve's "Custom Export" render settings, if the user leaves all dialog settings at their defaults, Resolve takes that to mean that it should specify a custom name (the value of which is what you reported seeing):

Good news: If you don't let Resolve add that custom name to exported .mxfs, you can get the behavior you desire, today.

Could you create an option where it just reads the file name? I'm not going to go searching for it when dealing with multiple files. If I import something that is called "Film_abc_123.mxf" it's not really helping anything to load it as "untitled.mxf" and as I don't have any control over what it is exported as then I would hope I could just load a film with a particular name and see it as that name within Premiere! Not found any solutions online. Plenty of people have this problem though and it is frustrating!

PPro will read the "package name" metadata field (if present), and use that as the project item name.

The MediaInfo utility will let you see that field, if present, in your .mxf files.

Thank you Bruce - the file is 17.5gb and also it is student work so not sure I can send it over. I can try and dig out some of the other clips it has happened with. From what you are saying, it will read the name as it was exported from DaVinci and not the name of the file when I import it to PPro? Would you be able to explain why that is the case and how that is "correct"?

We would need to see one of the .mxf files, but from your video, it appears that Resolve is writing the media name into the .mxf as "Untitled", and PPro is (correctly) reading it.
