CEPHtmlEngine Helper hogging CPU

Quite often I find my Mac gets sluggish and the icons in the Dock start vibrating.

To fix this I need to force quit the CEPHtmlEngineHelper process which seems to suddenly ramp up CPU usage. But it’s only a temporary fix and keeps happening. Any ideas?

Wasn’t using Watchtower or Spell Book on this project. I may have had the Soundly app open but not the extension. Next time it happens I'm going to run a terminal command to try and pinpoint which process.

    Hi @DJP2014

Thanks for stopping by the Premiere forums! Wondered if you had this issue happening with the previous version macOS or after just recently updating to Golden Gate 27.2?

Some additional questions to help us better troubleshoot below -

    • Does it affect all projects or only some? What about new projects with a few sample clips?
    • Do you recall which Premiere this was last working in, when It started, and what might have changed? Any plugins, OS update, drivers, etc.
    • What happens if you try updating to the latest v26.5.2?

Screen Recording: If possible, include a recording of your screen showing the issue as that’s helpful.

We might like to ask for a Sample next. When the CPU spikes again, select CEPHtmlEngineHelper. Here’s how to do that:

    1. Open Activity Monitor and identify the Premiere process (you can use search to filter for only Premiere)
    2. In Premiere, get it into the hanging/unresponsive state
    3. Switch back to Activity Monitor and right click on Premiere then choose > Create Sample
    4. Click Save, then save it as a text file somewhere.

Then, you can DM me and either provide us the link/access to this file or I can send you a link to upload that file, whatever's easiest.

It sounds like when you temporarily quit CEPHtmlEngineHelper, it helps until it returns. Is there any more specifics as to when it returns, what you’re doing in Premiere or anything else?

    Hope to help,
    Katie

Hi @KatieToo I noticed it happening maybe 12-18 months ago but it seems quite random and doesn’t happen frequently enough for me to pinpoint the cause. I would update to v26.5.2 but there’s another bug I'm trying to avoid (unable to hide header bar).

Next time it happens will get you a sample.

@DJP2014 Taking a look over your screen recording/sample files. Do you happen to have any extensions currently installed, and if so, which ones? Any other third party plugins or anything else, as well?

    Let us know!
    Katie
