Hi everyone,

I’m dealing with a critical issue in Premiere Pro that completely blocks my editing workflow.

Problem:
Clips from my Sony A6700 (MP4) randomly show a frozen frame in the timeline, while audio continues normally. The playback is unusable.

Details:
• Camera: Sony A6700
• Format: MP4 (XAVC S / XAVC HS)
• Freeze frame occurs during playback in timeline
• Audio plays fine, video is stuck or updates inconsistently

Important observations:
• The issue persists even when using proxies (ProRes Proxy)
• Exported video is completely fine → this seems to be playback-only
• If I re-encode the source file and use “Replace Footage”, the clip in timeline turns black (no video at all, audio remains)

What makes this worse:
• This started in the middle of editing a large project
• Replace Footage doesn’t work → I can’t relink properly
• I basically can’t continue editing

What I’ve tried:
• Clearing media cache
• Restarting Premiere
• Re-importing files
• Using proxies (ProRes Proxy)
• Updating Premiere and system

Additional note:
The issue appears in multiple Adobe projects and persists after updates.

At this point I’m honestly stuck and quite desperate — this project is time-critical and I have no way to continue editing.

Has anyone experienced this or knows what could cause it?
Any help would be hugely appreciated 🙏

Hey, what are your computer specs and which version of Premiere are you using? Please let me know so I can help. I also had this problem and managed to solve it here. It might be related to your Nvidia driver and the Adobe Premiere version.

Hello, now it's understood, the Mac Mini doesn't have powerful and compatible hardware configurations for working with editing and those long-range codecs. At a minimum, you'll need a Mac or iMac with a dedicated Nvidia or AMD graphics card from the newer generations, like an RTX 3060 or AMD RX 7600, and 32GB of RAM to start. I worked for many years with Mac Pro, starting with the G5. In the good old days of the Mac Pro, Apple allowed upgrades to add a stronger graphics card and more RAM. If you want fluid editing, I suggest buying a new workstation with at least a dedicated graphics card and 32GB of RAM.

    @Dalibor

You wrote “The issue persists even when using proxies (ProRes Proxy)” and “This started in the middle of editing a large project” and since the things you have tried didn´t work i wonder how much free space do you have on your media disk?

10% or less free space do cause very similar issues like the one you have. The more free space, the better performance one get from a disk.

    Thank you @Averdahl

I would say I have enough space

    Hi @Dalibor
Welcome to the Premiere community. Something that could greatly help us solve this is if you can share the project and media where you are experiencing this. It would also help us if you could use the link " How to Report a Problem," which provides steps to provide more information that can help us identify the issue.

    Here to help.

And if that doesn't work, try resetting the preferences:

Try creating a new project and import the old one into it.
