Copy Media fails to initiate when importing Sony FX6 .MXF files

Issue:

Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Media Encoder stall at 0% when “Copy Media” has been selected in the “import settings” within the “import” tab.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Insert SD Card - Sony FX6 Camera Acquisition
  2. Launch Premiere/Create a New Project - Project settings are set to an external SanDisk USB-C Drive formatted as APFS.
  3. Within “Import” Browse to Untitled/private/XDRoot/ and select clip(s)
  4. Under “Import Settings” toggle on “Copy Media” and select the “Copy With MD5 Verification” preset and “Same as project” copied files destination.
  5. Select “Import”
  6. Observe that Adobe Media Encoder launches and the selected clips are populated into the “Queue” as expected. Observe that the status bar never moves. Observe that “Stop Queue” is available indicating that the Queue is running.
  7. Observe that Adobe Premiere Pro “Ingest Job Status” remains at 0% in the “Progress Dashboard” window.
  8. Observe that “Queue Started” is the only entry in the Adobe Media Encoder Log

Expected result:

Adobe Media Encoder should process (copy) all of the clips selcted from the media (physical SD card) to the desired location on the hard drive.

Actual result:

Adobe Media Encoder hangs/stalls after launching and no progress is made on any of the clips in the queue.

Adobe Premiere Pro version: Version 26.02 (Build 2)
Operating system: MacOS Tahoe Version 26.3.1

Hardware: Mac Studio (2025) M4 Max
Video format: 4096x2160 (1.0), 24 fps, Progressive, Rec. 709 - MXF wrapper

Additional Details:

This is happening on multiple systems. This is the same workflow with the same hardware and software that we have used for many so this is a recent issue in the last few weeks/months.

Troubleshooting Steps:

We changed the destination from an external hard drive to the internal desktop. No change. We tried copying without MD5 verification. No change. We bypassed Adobe Premiere and imported directly from Adobe Media Encoder after creating a “Copy Media” preset with the same settings as from Premiere. No Change (same result).

    Hi @EthanMurphyMiddlebury
Thanks for getting on the phone with me the other day. That gave me so much more insight into the problem you are experiencing. As we discovered right now, there is a bug in how the import copy media settings is functioning with clips in the Sony FX6 camera folder structure. The workaround is to move the .mxf clips from the Sony folder structure. Using third-party software is also an option in your case. I know you want to keep it simple and go back to how it was working before. I have logged the bug with the team, and I will monitor and update you with more information as we move toward a fix.

Today I had a very unpleasant experience with the full HD MXF format from a Sony XDCAM camera. I downloaded the files from the camcorder to a folder on my computer, and then imported them to edit in Premiere. The program simply crashed the file. The camera's codec is MXF MPEG-2 CBR 4.2.2 color 10 bits 50 Mbps. I tested it on the latest version of Premiere 26.0.2.2 and I simply couldn't edit these files from the Sony camera in Premiere. It's strange that in Windows and with VLC the files are produced normally, it's only when I import them into Premiere to edit that the program crashes.
Is it necessary to use some Sony encoder link to import into Premiere to edit, or is it a deficiency or bug in Premiere itself? I await reports.

Do you have a file of the problematic media that some of us could try on our setups?

Neil, the files are on the hard drive. As soon as I have time to upload them, I'll upload a download link and send it to you privately. It's strange that these freezes are only happening in Premiere 26. Also, since it's a client's video, I'll ask the people who sent me the video to record something random for me to send to you.

    Hi @EthanMurphyMiddlebury
Can you share the project and some media with us? Specifically, the Sony FX6 media files? And have you tried to import directly into Premiere without AME?  Thank you for filling in all the required info for your report as well.

Importing directly into Premiere from the SD card works, but I would never use this workflow because then students are editing off of the card, experiencing offline media, or worse are losing media when cards are wiped. I can obviously instruct them to manually copy the entire folder first and then import, but I’ll use Catalyst Browse instead if I have to do that. Would love to keep the workflow contained in the Adobe ecosystem.

I’m including a link to one short clip and xml sidecar without the full sony folder structure, let me know if you need the full file structure. It was over 1GB so I can’t attach it. I can share the project, but it’s just a dummy project with nothing in it just used to test importing.

One other note, it looks like the audio portion of the MXF (aac) copies just fine in AME, but then the video ingest is where it hangs. The clip shows up in my Premiere Pro Project, but when I “reveal in finder” it points to the file on the SD card which is even more problematic because students think that they have successfully copied the media to the workspace drive.

    Thanks for looking into this!

    Hi @EthanMurphyMiddlebury
Thanks for sharing the files with me. I am running through your steps and trying to re-create the issue. What is the project Location? The media is on the USB-C drive. Where is it being copied to? Internal drive, SAN, NAS, etc., or another external drive?  Also, what version of Media Encoder are you currently using?
