Direct Manipulation - permanent disable

Let us permanently toggle “Direct Manipulation” off!!!

This is an extremely annoying feature that PR does not remember if you once turn it off. Multiple times during a session and if not, on the next day, this damn switch toggles itself ON again and I want nothing to do with it!

There is nothing more annoying than being in a session and or flow state, wanting to change something on a clip while playback is running and everything stops because of one click.

I use PR every day and this was not a thing until recently. Keep the feature, fine. But don’t torture those of us who don’t want it and make PR at least remember our preferred “OFF” setting. Make it behave like Audio Scrubbing, make it behave like snap to timeline, make it an actual toggle and no dementia riddled mishap, please….

    Hello @leakuslokus

Welcome to the Premiere Forums. Thanks for describing the workflow. Selecting an effect or control that supports Direct Manipulation can activate its overlay in the Program Monitor; however, playback should not need to stop just to show those controls.

Could you clarify what action pauses playback? Selecting an effect in Effect Controls, selecting it in Properties, changing a parameter, or clicking/dragging in the Program Monitor? Please also include the following information.

    • Premiere Version: How to find the exact version of Premiere you're using.
    • Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
    • Chip (Mac Only): Specify which M-series Chip or CPU/GPU combo.
    • GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.

The exact steps will also help determine whether the playback stop is a separate issue. A preference to keep Direct Manipulation off—including preventing it from turning back on after selecting an effect or reopening Premiere sounds like a useful feature request and I encourage you to post it on the Premiere Features Forum to gather votes of support.

    Hoping to help,

    Amy
