Eyedropper causes crash

I do a lot of color correction of raw video. (Generally .MXF) Often (about 40% of the time) when I attempt to use the eyedropper tool to white balance a source video, the entire software will freeze. My cursor becomes stuck as the eyedropper, and if I click out of Premiere, my monitors (2) go black. No other processes freeze, and I can open the AltTab menu or my Windows menu with keys, but clicking anywhere on either monitor does nothing until I attempt to close Premiere enough times that it gives the “...is not responding” message and lets me close out.

To be clear, this is only happening when editing Source clips, I have not encountered the issue when correcting in the Program monitor.

Please advise. Thank you!

    Hello @gifted_dynamisme3f1,

Welcome to the Premiere Forums. Thank you for posting, this sounds like a frustrating issue. Unpredictable bugs can be exceptionally hard to diagnose so the more information we have, the better.

    • Premiere Version: Find the exact version of Premiere you're using in Help → About Premiere on Windows. Premiere → About Premiere on Mac.
    • Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
    • GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.
    • Monitor Setup: What resolutions are your monitors setup at and how are they connected. Is there a dock?
    • Media Storage: How is your media being stored and are you writing this data to XMP?
    • Does this happen in a new project with newly imported media?
    • About how long while working is it before you experience this issue?
    • Has this happened in previous versions of Premiere or just this version?

Because this is technically a freeze or hang, we could possibly benefit from a Sample or Dump File as well. I saw you mentioned windows so I’ll copy our Window’s instructions below.

    WINDOWS dump file:

    1. Open Task Manager go to the Processes tab, and identify the Premiere process (you can use search to filter for only Premiere)
    2. In Premiere, get it into the hanging/unresponsive state
    3. Switch back to Task Manager and right click on Premiere then choose > Create dump file
    4. When it's finished, it tells you where it saves the .DMP file.
    5. It'll be large, but it ZIPs down smaller. So right click on the file and choose Compress to..ZIP file.
    6. Then, you can DM me and either provide us the link/access to this file or I can send you a link to upload that file, whatever's easiest.

During the freeze this could potentially tell us what other processes are running that could be causing it.

    Hoping to help,

    Amy
