Focus keeps shifting to Project or Bin panels after insert / overwrite

I know this one comes up a lot, but none of the previously-given solutions are working for me.

PROBLEM: when I use the 'inset' or 'overwrite' keyboard shortcuts, the focus shifts from the Source Monitor pane to a random bin or project panel (focus does not switch to the the Timeline, as most people have problems with). This behaviour began about three days ago, seemingly aprops of nothing, and it's driving me crazy.

ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS:

- reset my preferences. It didn't make a scrap of difference.

- Window > Workspaces > Reset to Saved Layout. It works for the first insert/overwrite, but after that focus keeps switching away from the Source Monitor.

- Preferences > Timeline > Set focus on the Timeline when performing Insert/Overwrite edits. I have this off by default, but I turned it on, did a few inserts, the focus switched to the Timeline, as expected. Then I disabled the function and for the first three inserts, focus stayed on the Source Monitor. Then it went back to switching to bins or projects.

- reviewed Keyboard Shortcuts. There were no conflicts, but I removed the insert and overwrite shortcuts anyway, saved, remapped the shortcuts and saved again. Behaviour continued.

- split Source Monitor and Program Monitor into different panes, as this user discovered. Behaviour continued.

I really don't know what else to do, and I can't get it into my muscle memory to Shift+2 after every Insert. Any suggestions (that don't involve me trashing my preferences and spending hours rebuilding them again)?

No suggestions?

New problematic behaviour has arisen today. Focus still keeps jumping to the project bin panel after an Insert or Overwrite. But now, when I press Shift+2 to get back to the Source Monitor, the 'set in-point' (I) and 'set out-point' (O) keyboard shortcuts don't work. I have to double click on the clip in the bin to re-load it into the Source Monitor if I want to make a second I/O selection from it. I've never encountered this behaviour before. Keyboard editing is officially now futile.

With all the problems I've been posting about lately, my workflow is absolutely tanking. Why does it feel like Premiere is decaying before my eyes?

How do I express to you, Adobe, that I am literally on the cusp of quitting you??? As soon as this edit is over, I will be trialling Resolve for the next short project. And if it proves more stable and reliable than Premiere has been these last few weeks, then there'll be little incentive to renew my subscription in March.
