Focusrite ASIO Audio and mute problem

Title: Premiere Pro 26.5.1 + Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen — ASIO Mute/Unmute করার পর Premiere Restart করলে Timeline Playback কাজ করে না

Hello Adobe Premiere Pro Engineering / Community Team,

I am reporting a reproducible audio/playback problem in Adobe Premiere Pro 26.5.1 when using a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen with the Focusrite USB ASIO driver.

I have spent a considerable amount of time troubleshooting this issue, and I have also tested the same Focusrite interface on a second PC. The same problem occurs there as well.

I would like Adobe to investigate this as a possible Premiere Pro ASIO/audio-engine state or initialization problem.

My system

OS: Windows 11

Premiere Pro: 26.5.1

CPU: Intel Core i7-14700F

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z790S WiFi DDR4

RAM: 32GB DDR4 (4 × 8GB)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12GB

Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen

Focusrite Driver: 4.143.0.261

Focusrite Firmware: 1605

Sample Rate: 48 kHz

ASIO Buffer: 1024 samples

Clock: Internal / SYNCED

Premiere is configured to use:

Audio Hardware → Device Class: ASIO → Focusrite USB ASIO

My desired/normal output routing is Premiere Playback 1–2, going to both the Focusrite Monitor Outputs 1–2 and the corresponding Line/Headphone monitoring path.

Exact problem

The problem does not normally appear immediately after opening Premiere.

Initially, the project opens and Timeline playback works normally.

The problem starts after I use the Mute / Unmute function on an audio track.

For example:

1. Open Premiere Pro.

2. Open my project.

3. Timeline playback works normally.

4. Press M (Mute) on an audio track.

5. Press M again to Unmute.

6. After the Mute → Unmute operation, the audio/playback state can become abnormal.

7. Sometimes the audio does not respond correctly to the Mute/Unmute state.

8. I can continue working for some time, but the audio engine appears to be left in an abnormal state.

The most important part is what happens after I close Premiere Pro.

After restarting Premiere Pro

If I completely close Premiere Pro and then open Premiere Pro again and reopen the same project, the problem becomes much more serious.

The project opens, the Timeline and clips are visible, but when I press Play, the Timeline does not play correctly.

In other words:

Normal playback → Mute → Unmute → audio becomes abnormal → close Premiere → reopen Premiere/project → Timeline playback is stuck/not working correctly.

This is the main problem I would like Adobe to investigate.

Important test: ASIO vs MME

I tested the same project using different Premiere Audio Hardware settings.

ASIO

Audio Hardware → Device Class: ASIO → Focusrite USB ASIO

The problem is reproducible.

MME

When I change the Device Class to MME, the same problem does not reproduce in the same way.

This is one of the strongest indications that the problem may be related to the interaction between:

Premiere Pro Audio Engine + ASIO + Focusrite USB ASIO driver

rather than simply being a hardware failure.

Temporary workaround that I discovered

There is a strange behavior that may be useful for debugging.

When the Timeline playback becomes stuck, I can sometimes temporarily recover it by doing this:

Audio Hardware → ASIO → change to MME → Apply → change back to ASIO → Apply

After switching MME and then switching back to ASIO, Premiere can start playing normally again.

However, this is only a temporary workaround.

If I close Premiere and restart it, the problem can come back again after the same Mute → Unmute workflow.

This makes me suspect that the ASIO audio engine/device initialization state is not being correctly reset or restored.

Very important hardware test

I did not test this on only one computer.

I physically disconnected the same Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen from my main PC and connected it to another PC with essentially the same configuration.

I then installed/used the same Premiere/Focusrite setup and tested the same workflow.

The same problem occurred on the second PC.

Therefore, the problem does not appear to be limited to one particular motherboard, CPU, RAM, GPU, Windows installation, USB port, or individual PC.

The fact that the same Focusrite interface produces the same behavior on two different PCs makes this particularly interesting.

What I have already checked

I have already spent considerable time troubleshooting the following:

- Premiere Pro Audio Hardware settings

- ASIO vs MME

- Focusrite USB ASIO

- Sample rate

- ASIO buffer size

- Focusrite Control

- Focusrite driver

- Focusrite firmware

- USB connection

- Testing the interface on another PC

- Restarting Premiere Pro

- Reopening the same project

- Mute / Unmute behavior

- Solo/ISO-related audio behavior

The Focusrite interface itself does not appear to have a general hardware failure because the same interface behaves differently when the Premiere ASIO workflow is changed, and the problem is reproducible in Premiere on another PC as well.

Why I believe this needs investigation by Adobe

The most unusual part of this problem is the combination of these three things:

1. Mute → Unmute triggers the abnormal audio state.

2. Closing and reopening Premiere can leave Timeline playback unable to play normally.

3. Switching ASIO → MME → ASIO can temporarily recover the playback.

This suggests that something may be happening with the Premiere Pro audio engine / ASIO device state after a Mute/Unmute operation.

I would like to know whether this is a known issue in Premiere Pro 26.5.1 with third-party ASIO interfaces, particularly Focusrite devices.

Expected behavior

Mute should mute the selected audio track.

Unmute should immediately restore normal audio playback.

Closing and reopening Premiere Pro should completely reset the audio engine and restore normal Timeline playback.

Changing Mute/Unmute should never leave the ASIO audio engine in a state where the Timeline cannot play after restarting Premiere Pro.

Actual behavior

After Mute → Unmute:

- Audio behavior can become abnormal.

- The audio state does not always correspond correctly to the Mute/Unmute state.

- After closing and reopening Premiere Pro, Timeline playback may stop working correctly.

- Switching ASIO → MME → ASIO can temporarily restore playback.

- The problem can be reproduced using the same Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 on another PC.

Request to Adobe

Could the Premiere Pro engineering team please investigate whether there is an issue with:

- ASIO audio engine initialization/reinitialization

- Mute/Unmute state handling

- Audio engine state after closing and reopening a project

- Third-party USB ASIO interfaces

- Focusrite USB ASIO

- Timeline playback becoming stuck after an audio-state change

I can provide a screen recording showing the complete reproduction process, including:

Mute → Unmute → abnormal audio behavior → close Premiere → reopen project → Timeline Play failure → ASIO → MME → ASIO workaround.
