Footage Shot in 120fps is either choppy or stuck on the main "thumbnail"

I'm editing a project where I shot my footage in 120fps/23.97 4K on a Canon C70.

When I started working on the project a few weeks back, the footage played with no issue.

Since I've updated Premiere, for some reason the footage will either (1) Not play. The playhead moves as if it is, but the footage only changes from thumbnail to thumbnail of each clip or (2) play, but extremely choppy like frame to frame.

The footage has been rendered in to out. I tried putting it in a nested sequence. I also made another new sequence and re-added the footage. Still the same issues. I've restarted my Premiere and my computer multiple times. Nothing seems to be working.

Any help would be appreciated 🙂

That behavior is fairly typical of a system struggling with that really heavy load of 10 bit 422 HEVC long-GOP media processing. Especially at that higher pixel count.

Curious ... when you render the previews, are you using the H.264 long-GOP format or the ProRes intraframe one? The ProRes should play back better.

Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums and sorry you've been experiencing issues. We need a few more details to help, like the exact version of Premiere Pro are you on and hardware information. Please see How to Report a Problem.

Do you recall which version you were on previously? As mentioned, knowing more details about the video file type you are working with would be very useful as well. You can also right-click the file in the Project panel > Media File Properties, and share a screenshot of that.
