Full Resolution Media Does Not Automatically Relink After Round-Trip Editing with Proxy Workflow

Adobe Version: 26.30 build 93

Product: Adobe Premiere Pro

Issue Summary:
When using a proxy workflow, Premiere Pro no longer automatically relinks the original full-resolution media after a project has been edited on another system and returned to the original editor.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Import full-resolution media into a Premiere Pro project.
  2. Create and attach proxy files.
  3. Save the project and send it (along with the proxies) to another editor.
  4. The second editor opens the project, edits using the proxies, saves the project, and sends it back.
  5. Open the returned project on the original system where the full-resolution media still exists in its original location.

Expected Result:
Premiere Pro should automatically reconnect the original full-resolution media since the project is being opened on the original machine where the source media is still available. The proxies should remain attached, and no manual relinking should be required.

Actual Result:
The full-resolution media is reported as offline and does not automatically relink. Each clip must be manually relinked individually, making the workflow extremely time-consuming on larger projects.

Impact:
This significantly slows down collaborative editing workflows that rely on proxies. Projects containing hundreds or thousands of clips require extensive manual relinking, reducing the efficiency of Premiere Pro's proxy workflow.

Additional Notes:

  • This occurs after a round-trip workflow between two editors.
  • The original high-resolution media has not been moved or renamed.
  • The project is reopened on the original system where the source media resides.
  • This behavior appears to differ from previous versions where the original media was automatically recognized upon reopening the project.

    Hey @eddie22352057rc9x and @eddieo70896472

I have good news. A fix is present in the Current Beta. If you haven’t downloaded the Beta before, you can find it in the Creative Cloud Desktop app. Instructions here: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/creative-cloud-beta.html

Rolling back to 26.2.2 is also a current workaround until the new version is officially released. Thank you both very much for bringing this to our attention.

    Best,

    Amy

Hello @eddie22352057rc9x and hello to fellow Eddie @eddieo70896472 !

It can help us to know the system specs of each system the Editors were using. If going from Mac to PC to Mac or vice versa, the file paths may be saved differently so that could cause this issue.

Needing to re-link one by one could be caused by someone relinking a Master to the Proxy instead of just attaching proxies. This could make the file name different than what it’s supposed to be, which would be why you’re having to go one by one. In the Relink menu, could you check if the underlined matches the circled name on your end, and do you have Display Exact Name checked or unchecked?

Feeling left out my name isn’t Eddie or Edward.

    Hoping to help,

    Amy

I made a loom breaking down the issue here! Hopefully this answers your questions -

Thanks @eddieo70896472 the video is super helpful.

I just want to confirm that both you and the editor are on the same version of Premiere 26.3? PC Windows 11 with what GPU, Mac Tahoe 26.5.2 is it an M series chipset? This can help with testing on our end.

I also would love to confirm that this is the workflow:

    1) You have Camera Raw Media that you Transcode outside of Premiere to a friendlier codec, but it has the same filenames.
    2) You use Premiere to Create Proxy Media, which becomes “filename_proxy”
    3) You send to your Editor to cut with just the Proxy Media
    4) With the finished edit, you want to Reconnect to the Camera Raw but still be able to toggle Proxies on to work with them?

In the Loom it appears that some of your “Filename_proxy” are the ones relinking to the Hi res media, in which case, when you toggle proxies on, you will be toggling from the initial import before proxies were made, to the Higher definition footage? Have you tried navigating to the Proxy folder and manually selecting the file with “Filename_proxy” so that Clip name and filename are the same? (this shouldn’t happen, the search should go to the right one, but I’m seeing that difference in your video).

Do you recall which version you didn’t have to do this in? Was it 26.2.2?

I did find some internal issues they are working on that look a bit related. I take it you already tried unchecking “Relink others automatically” do one relink and then recheck that box to see if that wakes up the connection (long shot).

Hello fellow Eddie. I’m experiencing the exact same issue. It’s now making me reconnect all full resolution media one by one. I have the "Relink others automatically" marker checked, and it's still not automatically re-linking everything. It's making me re-link everything one by one.
