I am unable to edit text in the transcript window

When I am editing text in the transcript window, everything is fine for a few minutes. I can edit text and make changes as normal. Then after a few minutes, it suddenly stops working. I can edit the text, but when I press ‘Return’, the text doesn’t change - it just reverts back. I have tried going back to the source file and editing the transcript there, but I have the same issue. I have to quit and restart Premiere, and then it allows me to make edits again, until a few minutes later when the issue repeats itself. I have tried cleaning the media database, but it doesn’t make any difference.

I am using Premiere Pro 26.0.1 on a 2023 Mac Mini.

Thanks

    Hi @tiMarc

Thanks for posting about this. It sounds frustrating that the transcript stops updating after a few minutes. Could you share a bit more info to help narrow it down:

    • Are you seeing this with all sequences or just one?

    • Does it happen with multiple clips or only a single clip?

    • Any error messages or unusual behavior in the console when it happens?

    A couple things to try:

    1) Reset the Transcript panel

Try closing the panel and reopening it, or switching to the Text-Based Editing workspace. Sometimes the panel can get into a temporary state where it stops committing changes.

    2) Test in a brand-new project

Create a new project, import a short clip, transcribe it, and try editing in the transcript. If it works there, the issue may be project-specific.

    Let us know:

    • Does the issue happen in a fresh project?

    • Does clearing the cache make it stable longer?

The more details you can provide, the easier it will be to figure out what’s causing this.  Please see: How do I report a Problem?  Sorry for the frustration, and thanks for reaching out.

    Hi Rach

    Thanks for the reply.

This is a general issue that I seem to have, and is not limited to one specific project. Sometimes closing and reopening the Text window helps temporarily, but I find the only consistent way to get the transcript editing working again is to quit and restart Premiere.

I transcribe mostly multicam clips, but I don’t think this is an issue because I have the same problem when trying to edit the transcript directly on the source files.

I hope that’s sufficient info… let me know if I can explain anything else.

    @tiMarc,

When you are in the edit mode window in the Transcript tab, Enter should enter that character in the text. The Esc key should save your changes and exit the edit mode. (Shft+Esc discards your changes and exits edit mode.)

That said, the fact that things are working for you and then not is the problem. Frustrating.

I am on Windows, but I think all of that is true for Mac also. Only the Enter key on the keyboard (not the keypad) is active. When in navigation/non-edit mode, Enter goes into edit mode with the cursor in the  position you were in.
