  • Issue - Labels disappear after attaching proxies to offline timeline
  • Adobe Premiere Pro version number: 25.1.0
  • Operating system - Mac Sonoma 14.5
  • System Info: CPU, GPU, RAM, HD:
    • Mac Studio M2 Max

    • 96GB RAM

    • Hard Drive External USB 3.0

  • Video format: ProRes Proxy, 1920x1080, 23.98fps
  • Workflow details: First editor created a project from raw .BRAW media in PP 25.1.0. He created sequences with the RAW footage and labeled each clip with color lables. Sent me proxy versions of the .BRAW files for download and the original project file. Asked that I don't Relink Proxies but instead attach proxies and leave original media offline.
  • Steps to reproduce -
    • 1. Create a new PPv25.0.1 project with RAW media edited into a timeline (create ProRes proxies of the original media separately, do not attach to the project)
    • 2. label media in the timeline with different color labels
    • 3. close the project and open the project on another computer.
    • 4. Offline all original RAW media
    • 5. Select the raw media offline clips in the project window and Attach/Proxies to all those clips. (Proxies should have the exact same name as the original files except for file extension)
    • 6. once proxies are attached, look at your sequence. All clip labels have been reset to the Iris color.
  • Expected result - Expected all the label colors to stay in intact after attaching proxies
  • Actual result -  All label colors were reset to the Iris color

Ugh, apparently I spoke too soon. I just did another proxy attach to a different set of media in the project and one clip's proxies attached and preserved the clip label colors, but all others did not. Super weird.

Sadly I can't share any project files or media with you but I can tell you why we are working this way. Essentially I am doing offline editing with proxies only that are on a server. The original editor created the project using original blackmagic media on a local harddrive and also created the proxy files that I would be working with. In our experience, using relink to proxies rather than just attaching proxies creates a relink nightmare when its time to online the project. If I just attach proxies, the links to the original drive and the original media stays in tact in the project and the original editor can just offline the attached proxes and continue with his day. Forcing a relink to the proxies that are not on the original drive means that the original editor has to force relink everything back to original media. Note that nothing about the source file names have changed between the original RAW files and the proxies except for the file extensions (ie. .braw vs. .mov)

But you can see that we are working around Premiere's sensitive media management system and trying to avoid extensive and time wasting relink work. I don't think you need my specific project or media to reproduce this, I think this is just how premiere was programmed to be, I'm just pointing it out :).  ~thanks M

@MichMcg
I see what you mean if those labels were made before that option was toggled on then yes the sequence can contain different labels than what is in the folders of the project panel. Let's try something else then. How are you attaching the proxies once you have the RAW clips offline? If you are using the attach proxies menu option I would try to use the Link media option and see if the proxies can reconnect. That way the sequence information/Labels should remain the same. Would you be able to provide a sample project and some files for us to take a look at and help us recreate the same issue?

Thank you

Ian

hi @IanB_360 Thanks for the reply, I tried the toggle and it did not change the clip labels in the timeline. I would assume that preference has no effect on this because the labels were applied to clips in the sequence, not to the source clips.

Hi @MichMcg
In your sequence panel go to the Wrench and click to reveal the menu. The top menu item should be "Show Source Clip Name and Label". Toggle that menu item on or off and see what happens to the clip colors in your sequence. Let us know if this helps.
Thank you
