Locate File search ignores a Favorites folder on Google Drive and searches the first local drive instead
Product / Version:
Premiere Pro 26.5.1 Build 5
macOS Goldengate 27.0.1, Apple Silicon (Mac Studio 2023)
Google Drive for desktop 131.0.2.0 (Apple Silicon), File Provider mode
Summary:
When relinking an offline clip, if the folder selected in the Locate File browser is a Favorite located on Google Drive (Google Drive for desktop), clicking Search does not search that folder. Instead, the search runs against the first drive listed under Local Drives. The bug requires both conditions: the same Google Drive folder searches correctly when reached through the folder tree, and a Favorite on a standard local drive also searches correctly.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Save a project folder located on Google Drive as a Favorite in the Locate File dialog.
2. Open a project containing an offline clip whose Last Path points to a location that doesn't exist on this machine (e.g. a project handed off from another editor, where the Last Path is in that editor's /Users/[username]/Downloads/ folder).
3. Right-click the clip > Link Media > Locate.
4. In the left pane, expand Favorites and select the saved Google Drive folder. The right pane correctly shows that folder's contents, and the dropdown above the tree shows the selected folder.
5. Leave "Display Only Exact Name Matches" checked and click Search.
Expected Result:
Search is scoped to the selected Favorite folder and its subfolders, and the Path field updates to reflect that selection.
Actual Result:
Search runs against the first drive listed under Local Drives instead of the selected Favorite. The file is not found, and the search ends with "Search stopped." The dropdown, tree selection, and right pane all show the correct folder, so the UI indicates the search will be scoped there when it isn't.
Control Tests:
- Same Google Drive folder, reached through the folder tree (not Favorites): searches correctly, file is found.
- Favorite pointing to a folder on a standard local drive: searches correctly, file is found.
- Favorite pointing to a folder on Google Drive: fails as described above.
Likely Cause:
Search handles Google Drive fine, and Favorites work fine on standard drives, so the failure is in how a Favorite's stored location is resolved when it points to cloud storage. Google Drive mounts through macOS's File Provider framework (~/Library/CloudStorage/GoogleDrive-[account]/) rather than as a standard volume. The Favorite's stored path likely doesn't map to a volume Premiere recognizes, so Search silently falls back to the first local drive. Other File Provider services (Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud Drive, Box) may be affected the same way.
Workaround:
Navigate to the Google Drive folder through the folder tree in the Cloud Sync section instead of using Favorites before clicking Search.
