Major lag on timeline with Premiere Pro v 23.1 - macOS

Since updating to Premiere v 23.1, I'm experiencing serious delays when performing standard actions on the timeline (scrubbing, trimming, playback, etc). Restarting the application seems to provide temporary relief, but performance quickly gets sluggish the longer I edit.

The lag occurs regardless of:

  • whether the playback resolution is 1/4 or high
  • whether High Quality Playback is checked
  • whether I've rendered clips on the timeline
  • the type of media (compressed video, proxies, just audio)

I've also tried:

  • updating macOS
  • setting my audio input to none
  • clearing the media cache
  • resetting the workspace

I use Productions and am working on the same projects (now upgraded to the new version) that had no performance problems before the last update. If anyone can help me troubleshoot or provide insight, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, y'all.

System specs

  • macOS Monterey
  • Version 12.6.2
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013)
  • Processor 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
  • Memory 64 GB 1866 MHz DDR3
  • Startup Disk Macintosh HD
  • Graphics AMD FirePro D300 2 GB

Hi dilanj, are you operating with macOS or Windows? If on Windows, this is a different bug. In either case, kindly try out Premiere Pro Beta to see if you are clear of the error.

Thanks,
Kevin

@Gabby16bit

Have you tried higher quality settings on the OBS side?  Or Lossless?

Users who transcode to a mezzanine format on the Premiere Pro side or optimized format on the Resolve side report better performance with OBS recordings.

Removing the temporal compression makes a huge difference.

If updating to 23.2 did not resolve the issue, then you are not experiencing the macOS side issue of the Sequence not releasing RAM as expected.

What mezzanine format are you using for editing and is your storage media fast enough to sustain the data transfer rate?

23.2 didn't change the problem for me. I have to quit and reopen every 10 minutes to avoid the progressive timeline lagging. This is the last time (of many) I break from work to surf the web to solve Premiere issues. Resolve, here I come. Premiere needs an entire overhaul.. it's essentially a legacy product with new features stacked on top. What a mess!

I'm still having stability issues with a T7 SSD samsung HDD, h264 mp4 footage from OBS 1920 x 1080p 60fps Two video tracks instead of one all the time on. Premiere version latest beta and 23.2.

⚡This is the primary task for today. Bring back Premiere's speed, smoothness, and stability. We look forward to releasing an update with these fixes as soon as possible.

May the power be with us 👈

when you're adding to this thread for the first time, when you're reporting that you're still having the issue, please tell us your system specs: OS version, Premiere version, amount of RAM, Hardware specs including graphics card, and your source properties and sequence settings and the type of media storage and how it's connected to your computer...

I'm still having these exact same issues as Mary described despite the new 23.2 update.

I'm having the exact issues ever since upgrading to Ventura and 23.2.  Getting so frustrated.  Shouldn't be happening.
