Missing masks data after project saved via Project manager

Pr 26.2.2, Win11 26h1, RTX 4080, internal SSDs, 14700K, 64 Gb of Ram. After my project was finished a month ago I exported it via the Project Manager in Premiere and then uploaded it into a cloud.

Today I needed to review something from this project, so I downloaded it back and upon opening it saw this:

It’s strange because there IS a masks data folder in the archive, but if I point Premiere to this folder, it does not relink the masks saying they can’t be located:

How come and how can I fix it? I’ve got quite a bunch of object masks in the project to retrack everything again.

Besides, the project was made in the same exact version of Premiere - 26.2.2 so there cannot be any mask data conflicts.

    Hi @AndrewTheGreat,

Thank you for the additional information and the possible cause. The team was able to reproduce sections of this occurrence, and so a bug report was submitted into our internal system. We appreciate your patience as the team investigates further.

    Best,

I found a project from the same series but with no masks in their new format and Pr faild to recognize 2 mxf files found in the root folder even if Locate was pressed. When I manually clicked one of these files, Premiere relinked both with no issue. I’m worried that Premiere does not see the exact names in the folder. What I have found is this:

See that after .mxf there’s Subclip03 - the reason why Premiere might not see it despite that the File extension checkbox is unmarked. I can 10000% swear that I have never put this slip into a subclip, I don’t use this feature. But I did use the Cut Scene detection on this feature so that might be the reason for at least this mxf format because I get them from the archive dep as “collects” (hundreds of clips in one big video). Despite the fact that I had not use the Collect and transcode feature of the Project manager, Premiere might consider this whole 6-minute Collect MXF as a rendered ore somehow changed though it is not and in fact it’s the original mxf I had got.

I home my findings will shed the light on the problem.

    Hi,

Can you try duplicating the project and opening it in the current version of Premiere? Let us know.

    Thanks,

    Hi @AndrewTheGreat,

Thanks for reporting this occurrence and providing screenshots! To better assist you the team will need some more information:

    • When trying to reopen the consolidated project, is it the same exact version of Premiere it was saved in?
      • For example, was the initial finished project in Pr 26.2, consolidated, and now you’re trying to reopen in 26.2.2?
        • Here is a similar community post regarding the different versions.
    • Are the files able to be located individually or not at all?
    • Is there any issue in relinking the footage?
    • Does a “restore” button appear in the Missing Mask Window when updating to 26.3.2 or in the latest Beta?

    Additionally for further context:

    • Does this affect all projects or only consolidated?
    • Is the same occurrence happening with consolidated projects not from the cloud?
    • Was there ever a version of Premiere where this workflow performed as you expected?

    Best,

    Jonathan

Hi, @Jonathan+Editor Thanks for reaching back.

    • Yes, it’s the same exact version of Pr - 26.2.2, even the build number should be the same.
    • What files do you mean? The masks are in a separate Masks folder, like Pr made it (the screenshot is posted above), the files used in the project are also present in the Copied root folder. I don’t see anything missing. If I point the masks folder to Premiere it acts as if it doesn’t see any masks data inside, like the folder is empty, but again the screenshot is above.
    • Actually there is a relinking footage issue. And it’s strange. Normally if there are unlinked media you just point at one file and Pr relinks all of them. This time it relinks only the file you pointed at. Like here - these are all camera clips, they were not renamed or changed in any way, but Pr thinks they are unlinked:

Also see the File extension is uncheched - I followed a recommendation here on Adobe forums from a guy with a similar problem, but it didn’t help. The Relink others automatically is checked so Premiere should not have any issue relinking all of them but it fails. When I hit the Locate button it says it cannot find the files though here they are:

If I click the file that is chosen to be relinked, Pr starts locating the files, relinks that chosen file and again remains blind to the  others:

If I cancel the relinking and try it within the project either by right-click context menu Relink media, or Proxy- Reconnect Full resolution media it acts again like at the start - it cannot see the files in front of it. And before you ask - no I didn’t work with proxies at this project, it’s just a way to relink media.

So I end up relinling one file at a time which is a very slow process given that Premiere tries to locate the other files every time it relinks one and the amount of files is … let me see … 187.

    • 26.3.2 act the same way. I cannot test the Beta - no time for it now.
    • I checked it with another project and didn’t wave issues there. But it had some differences - it was a smaller project which besides did not contain any object masks and it was zipped. Since the cloud des not allow files begger than 50 Gb, I had to upload the project in question as unzipped folder with all the files inside free of compression. I’ll check this clue...
    • I don’t have any consolidated projects not in the cloud. But I get your idea, so I made a consolidated project anew and checked it - no issue there.
    • Yes, I think starting from v. 25.something I’ve been archiving the project in the cloud like this and from time to time I have to bring some of them back from the cloud and I don’t remember having such issues. But back then there were no masks data, again, and if some files got unlinked for some reason, Premiere always picked up the others automatically once you pointed it one of them
