MP3 not working in 2026

One of our editors updated a project from 2025 to 2026 and nothing using mp3s works. I've encountered this problem quite a few times over the years as well.

Can't relink any MP3 files or drop new ones in - "the importer reported a generic error"

Can you check that “Preferences>Media Cache>Media Cache Files>Location...” is populated with a location.  If it is blank, or you cannot write to that location, this can happen.

Please let us know as we are tracking this internally.

    Hi @real_5081

Thanks for reaching out. As Peru Bob’s suggestions mention, clearing the media cache and converting the MP3s to WAV are worth trying as a first step.

Can you let us know if either of those workarounds helped? Also:

    • What version of Premiere are you on exactly?
    • What OS?
    • Do the MP3s import correctly in a brand new empty project, or does the error occur there too?

Please also see: How do I report a Problem?  Sorry for the frustration. I hope we can help get this sorted. I hope we can help you soon.

Delete the Media Cache and Media Cache files:

Then try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

Try converting the mp3 files to wav files

Then replace the mp3 files with the wav files.

Premiere Pro can get wonky with mp3.
