newly created sequences don't interact properly in the project window

Working in 26.5.1 (Windows 11), in a Production. The issues below began today for the first time.

 

In any project (Production or standalone), I create a new sequence via File > New > Sequence (or any path that opens the Sequence Settings dialog) and click OK. The resulting sequence appears selected in the Project panel, but attempting to rename it shows no blinking caret, and right-click context submenus (Label, Modify, etc.) fail to expand on hover — only on click. I can still type letters, but the caret is invisible. If I copy and paste an existing, correctly functioning sequence from within the same project, the bug will not exhibit. If I copy/paste or move a sequence from another project (while in a Production), the bug will exhibit. Creating a sequence without the dialog (e.g., dragging a clip to the Timeline, or dragging a clip onto the Project panel's New Item icon) does not exhibit the bug. Also, newly created sequences never register in app-level selection state (Metadata/Info panels don't update, context menu hover fails, rename caret doesn't render) despite being visually selected in the Project panel. I can still load the affected sequence into the timeline and work with it.

This bug does not seem to occur with newly created and/or moved/copy/pasted bins or clips, only with newly created sequences. I also created a fresh project outside my Production. In that project, a new sequence created via the dialogue box displayed the same behavior (no caret, no submenu expansion), but it DID show up in the metadata panel. The bug is not fixed by clicking away/back, workspace reset, widening Name column, restarting the app, duplicating the sequence, creating in a fresh project. 

Sequences created via any path that opens the Sequence Settings dialog (File > New > Sequence, etc.) fail to properly receive hover/focus events afterward — no caret when renaming, no hover-expand on context submenus — despite Metadata panel showing correct info. Sequences created without the dialog (drag to Timeline, drag to Project panel's New Item icon, right-click clip(s) > New Sequence from Clip) are unaffected.

      Bug: Premiere Pro 26.5.1 — Project panel loses hover/focus event handling for sequences with an empty timeline (no clips).

      Symptoms on an empty sequence's Project panel row:

      • Renaming the sequence shows no blinking caret (text input is still silently accepted if typed blind)
      • Right-click context submenus (Label, Modify) require a click to expand instead of expanding on hover
      • The Media End column reads a sentinel-like value (23:00:00:01) instead of a real duration

      Confirmed root cause — content presence, checked live:

      • Sequences created empty (File > New > Sequence dialog) exhibit the bug
      • Sequences created with content (drag clip to Timeline, drag clip to New Item icon, right-click > New Sequence from Clip) do not
      • Adding a clip to a previously-broken empty sequence immediately fixes the caret/hover behavior for that same sequence — no new item, no duplication needed
      • Deleting that clip back out immediately breaks it again
      • This confirms the check is dynamic/live, tied to whether the sequence currently contains media, not a one-time initialization defect

      Not Production-specific, not project-specific, not session-specific. Not resolved by preference reset, workspace reset, or app restart.

        Thank you for doing these additional tests. The fact that adding a clip immediately restores the caret and hover behavior—and removing it brings the issue back—is a particularly helpful finding. It narrows the reproduction to whether the sequence contains media, rather than how or where it was created.

        I’m still unable to reproduce it on my system, so this detail will be useful in investigating further. If you’re comfortable sharing, could you also provide your GPU and driver version, and let me know your monitor setup? And if you haven’t already tried it, does launching Premiere while holding Shift and clearing the Media Cache change the behavior? Have you seen the same behavior with sequences at different resolutions or presets, or have you tested only one set of sequence settings?

        Hi Amy,

        Yes, the info you have above is correct. 

        My GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, with studio driver version 581.57. I’ve confirmed that this is the most recent driver. I use a dual monitor setup with identical ViewSonic VG2453 displays. 

        Creating other sequences with various settings results in the same behavior. An empty sequence, regardless of resolution or settings, displays a “Media End” time of 23:00:00:01, and is broken. Adding any media to it immediately restores normal behavior. Obviously, this isn’t a crippling bug, but it’s certainly annoying, and hopefully resolvable in a future update.

        I’m hesitant to clear the media cache at the moment, as I’m deep into several huge projects for which rebuilding the media cache would a long, slowing process.

          Welcome to the Premiere forums! To better help you on this issue, we need a few more details as I am not experiencing this on my Windows 11 system in Premiere 26.5.1

          • GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.
          • What are your sequence settings for the sequence you are trying to create? Could you share a screenshot?
          • If you relaunch holding the shift key and clear Media Cache, does the issue resolve?
          • How many monitors do you have and what are their resolutions? How are they connected to your system, as in, what cables are you using and do you have a dock?

          I would also like to confirm that these are the appropriate reproduction steps and bug results, or did I miss something?

          1. Open any Premiere Pro Production or standalone project.

          2. Create a new sequence using a workflow that opens the Sequence Settings dialog, such as:

            • File > New > Sequence
            • Any other command that opens the Sequence Settings dialog
          3. Configure the sequence settings as needed.
          4. Click OK.
          5. In the Project panel, confirm that the new sequence is selected.
          6. Attempt to rename the sequence.

          Actual Result

          • The new sequence appears visually selected in the Project panel, but it does not properly register as selected at the application level.

          • When renaming the sequence:

            • Text can still be entered.
            • The blinking insertion caret is not visible.

          • When hovering over context-menu items:

            • Submenus such as Label and Modify do not expand on hover.
            • The submenu opens only after clicking the item.

          • In a Production:

            • The Metadata and Info panels do not update for the newly created sequence.

          • In a fresh standalone project:

            • The Metadata panel displays the correct sequence information, but the missing rename caret and hover behavior still occur.
          • The affected sequence can still be loaded into the Timeline and edited normally.
