No playback

Wondering if anyone could suggest anything I can do to get my Premiere Pro working again.

I was successfully using Premiere Pro 2024 until Friday. On Friday I used PP 2025 on another machine and subsequently installed Premiere Pro 2025 on this machine. I could successfully edit a video for about 10-60 seconds. Then the video, nor any of the imported media would play back - no video or audio will play. The footage remains frozen on whatever I was editing. If I leave it and some back to it, I don't get playback. I have to fully quit the app and reload to be able to edit for another little burst of time.

I think I've watched every YouTube video with suggestions of what to try to fix this - I've emptied the cache, looked at audio settings etc. Reset all preferences. I've also downloaded the 2024 version again, but I'm getting the same problem with 2024 now too.

I'm on Mac and not running the most recent Operating System, but that was the case too before Friday when I was successfully running PP2024.

Any suggestions for what to try would be greatly apprechiated, as need to be able to edit my work for longer than 60 seconds at a time!

Hi @aimeec51371053

Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums and sorry you've been experiencing issues. We need a few more details to help like kind of Mac and macOS version you are on and exact version of Premiere Pro you are using.

What kind of source media are you working with? You can find this information if you right-click on the video clip in the Project panel > Media File Properties and share a screenshot of it.

Is it possible you are working with Variable Frame Rate (VFR) fooatge? It's not ideal for editing and can cause perfomance issues. If it is, it is recommended to convert or transcode the files to Constant Frame Rate (CFR) with a more editing-friendly codec like ProRes before editing with them. See more on VFR footage here: FAQ: How to work with Variable Frame Rate (VFR) media in Premiere Pro?

You did mention you weren't having issues before—did you add more files to the project since then or does it seem to be getting stuck on a specific video clip? It could be a file-specific issue too.

Something else you could check: If you click on the little wrench icon in the bottom-right of the Program monitor, make sure High Quality Playback is deselected. And if you go to Window > Progress, do you see any processes taking place or getting stuck there?

Sorry for the frustration,
Dani
