P: Premiere EXTREME lag with proxies V25.2.3

  • Issue - Newest version of Premiere Pro lags and doesn't work smoothly with proxies (as shown in the attached screen recordings).
  • Steps to reproduce - Create proxies, toggle them on, and observe how the timeline performance is slower than it should be.
  • Expected result - It should be way smoother, as shown in the screen recording (attached) of the older Premiere version.
  • Actual result -  Way slower than it should be, timeline performance is bad.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro version - Version 25.2.3
  • Operating system - Windows 11
  • GPU driver version (Windows only) - Nvidia Studio Driver 576.02
  • Video format - XAVC-SH 4k 59.94 fps from Sony FX3
  • Comparative information helps us understand more about when the issue occurs:
    • Does it affect all projects or only some projects? It affects all projects.
    • Does it affect new projects? Yes.
    • When did the problem begin? Newest version of Premiere (version 25.2.3)

I've attached videos to show the issue.

P.S.: I also tried manually importing the proxies onto the timeline, and they work very smoothly. It's only when I attach them to the actual footage and toggle on the proxy icon where this issue occurs.

In Premeire Pro I am working with BCC+Beauty Studio, BCC+Denoise ML and BCC+Magic Sharp and get extreme lag with just one of them. Is this a poxy issue or what?

Hi @Will27540326c9gz
This is a known issue that we are investigating. Once we have updates, we will notify the community on the forums.

Here are some suggested workarounds:

Sequence scrubbing latency only occurs when you work with both the source and proxies linked to a sequence. You can work with just the proxies by importing them into the project and then making a new sequence from them. Or to avoid the latency in sequence scrubbing. You can offline your source media from the sequence linked to both source and proxy footage.

Hi @Will27540326c9gz
It has been flagged as a known issue, and a team is looking into it. Some users have suggested a potential workaround: unlink the source media and have the project linked to just the proxies. Could you let us know if the workaround is helpful for now?

I will try to post any updates we receive, but feel free to message me directly, and I can always check in on the status.

Hi @IanB_360 any development on this bug and whether there's a fix?

@nice_ocean9572 Ian in this thread said that they were able to replicate the issue on their end, so they're looking into it as we speak. No fix yet, I had to downgrade to V25.1 to be able to work with proxies.

I have the same problem. Is there now a solution to the issue or any alternative workarounds? Kinda weird that not more people are running into this.

@IanB_360 Thanks Ian, looking forward to seeing this fixed.

I’ve noticed a big change in how Premiere handles proxies during editing.

In the past, no matter how many clips I had on the timeline—even thousands—once the proxies were attached, Premiere would fly through the timeline without any issues. It was smooth and fast.

Lately though, it feels like Premiere is struggling to load the proxies. As shown in the attached video, there's a noticeable lag when scrubbing or jumping through the timeline. Once the clips "load," performance goes back to normal, but that initial delay wasn’t there before.

The only way I’ve found to force the clips to load is to play the entire timeline at full speed a couple of times. But even then, the clips tend to “unload” again as soon as I start editing—making things choppy all over again.

Nothing has changed on my end—same machine, same workflows. It used to be a breeze once proxies were ready.

Has something changed in how Premiere handles proxies? Can someone explain what’s going on with this drop in performance?

Hi @Sami Succar,

Thank you for submitting a bug report and sorry for the frustration. Would you be able to provide any more details on the source media and proxy format you are using? What kind of camera files are you working with?

Have you noticed if the proxies work well if they are on their own, with no source media attached? Additionally, is this visible only when scrubbing and jumping around, or is real-time playback affected as well?

Hope we can help you soon,
Dani

Hi @Will27540326c9gz
With the help of your files and my wonderful co workers from previous post I have been able to reproduce what you are seeing. I used an Nvidia machine with a RTX 4080 as well and the lag in playback is very noticeable when viewing proxies in the sequence playback window. We will get this information to the team as a bug report.
