P: Properties panel freezes on any interaction — text, captions, masks, shapes, fill, shadow, border.

Properties panel causes severe freezing on any interaction — 40+ second hangs, complete unresponsiveness

Premiere Pro 26.2.2 (latest stable release as of May 2026) freezes severely whenever the Properties panel is used. The issue was also reproduced on the latest Premiere Pro 26 Beta — confirming this is not version-specific within the 26.x branch. Specific examples:

  • Adding a simple text element and attempting to change color, border, or shadow: 40+ second freeze before any response
  • Editing background color or text color: application becomes completely unresponsive, requires force-close
  • Applying a simple mask to any element: full hang
  • Editing an existing caption: application freezes for 30–60 seconds or indefinitely

This is not occasional lag — every single interaction with the Properties panel triggers a freeze. The issue is consistent across all projects (new and existing), all sequence types, all source file formats (H.264, MP4, ProRes), and all timeline operations involving Properties.

System specifications:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit, build 26100
  • RAM: 48GB total — 36GB allocated to Premiere Pro, 12GB to other applications
  • Storage: Working directories and media cache relocated to SSD with ample free space — no disk errors, no bad sectors reported
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER
  • GPU Driver: Studio Driver 610.47 (latest as of May 27, 2026), installed clean via DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) — full wipe of previous driver before reinstall
  • No viruses, malware, or system integrity issues detected

Critical technical finding: Plugin logs (Film Impact) reveal Premiere is reporting

gpu": "Unknown GPU device [m/used]"

— the GPU is not being correctly identified. As a direct consequence, the CUDA renderer dropdown is completely grayed out in Project Settings (Mercury Playback Engine CUDA shows as the only option but is non-interactive). This GPU misidentification appears to be the root cause of the Properties panel rendering failures, as panel rendering relies heavily on GPU acceleration.

Note:

the cuda_supported_cards.txt
orkaround is no longer available in Premiere Pro 26 — the file does not exist in the installation directory, removing a previously viable fix for GPU recognition issues.

Troubleshooting already performed — none resolved the issue:

  • Full uninstall and reinstall of Premiere Pro 26, including manual deletion of all AppData, cache, and temp directories
  • Tested on Premiere Pro 26 Beta (latest) — issue persists identically
  • Updated GPU driver from 596.49 to 610.47 Studio — no improvement
  • Full DDU wipe and clean driver reinstall — no improvement
  • Disabled NVIDIA In-Game Overlay
  • Disabled GPU-accelerated interface rendering (Preferences > General) — marginal improvement only
  • Disabled hardware acceleration for video decoding (Preferences > Media)
  • Disabled and relocated all Film Impact plugin folders (partial improvement confirmed — plugin was the largest single contributor, but issue persists without it)
  • Changed sequence preview codec from Apple ProRes 422 LT to GoPro CineForm
  • Disabled Linear Color composition in sequence settings
  • Cleared media cache and relocated working directories to SSD
  • Tested with antivirus (Norton) disabled
  • Tested with tablet drivers (Huion) disabled
  • Tested on a fresh Windows user profile

Adobe support response to date: downgrade to Premiere Pro 25.

The system is clean, the hardware is capable, and the issue is fully reproducible on both the latest stable and latest beta versions of Premiere Pro 26. This appears to be a bug in how Premiere Pro 26 identifies and interfaces with the GPU for Properties panel rendering, rather than a hardware or environment issue.

    Amy the Stuv:

Paul here again.  One week to go before I try to teach a workshop using Premiere pro for creating videos.  I presume the issue the Properties Panel (and pull down menus) hanging up during editing is still active?  I’ve seen the suggestion of installing an older version, like 26.0, but I don’t know where to access old versions.  Do I do that through my Creative Camus university website?

    Hi @Paul2339020355kc,

I’m not certain how the university website is set up, but there should still be access to a Creative Cloud App. The versions are available at the location seen below.

Your University should have a Creative Cloud Login
This is the Menu that pops up when you click “other versions”

I’m wondering if you have anything hooked up via bluetooth. That’s a lead we are running down. This is not to say that you shouldn’t use Bluetooth or accessibility features like what another post discovered while teaching, but if we can isolate it could be a bluetooth connection then we can start investigating a fix for that.

This is the post that identified accessibility features and the fix for that should have been in 26.5 but we have not confirmed it yet in every person’s case.

Any more information about the setup at the university would be most helpful. Unfortunately Freeze / Hang symptoms are the equivalent of flu like symptoms. It can mean a lot of things and can be difficult to track down the root cause.

Please DM me with more information about the University and the setup. I’m hoping to get more engineer’s eyes on this issue soon.

    Thank you,

    Amy

    Hi there @Carla Giraudo

Thank you for stopping by the Premiere forums and giving us a little info about your specs and the issue you’re having with freezing. Sorry for the frustrations with that one. Our team is aware and actively investigating this.

I did want to confirm a little more details for our bug report.
    1) What MacOS are you on?
    2) How is your media stored? On a NAS? On an External Drive?
    3) Have you ever had any crash reports come up to turn in? (Even if not, if you happen to, put your email in the blank before sending and DM us what that email is so we can directly look that up)
    4) Do you have dual monitors and are they matching in resolution?

Also, is this happening in brand new, empty projects? I take it that it’s affecting all your projects if it began with the v26.X and thereafter updates, but can you confirm it’s affecting all or just some?

So the last working version of Premiere for you might have been v25.6.6? Or can you remember which version it was if not that?

If possible, the next time Premiere is freezing, would you be able to collect the Sample file from that? You can even open up Activity Monitor before you go back to work in Premiere so it’s easy to swap back to when it freezes again.

    1. Open Activity Monitor and identify the Premiere process (you can use search to filter for only Premiere)
    2. In Premiere, get it into the hanging/unresponsive state
    3. Switch back to Activity Monitor and right click on Premiere then choose > Create Sample
    4. Click Save, then save it as a text file somewhere easy to access.

Then, you can DM me and either provide us the link/access to this file or I can send you a direct Dropbox upload link to our Dropbox, whatever's easiest.

Appreciate your time and effort reporting on this and please do let us know these additional details for the report.

    Thanks!

    Hi @KatieToo

Here is the additional information regarding the issue:

    1. macOS version: Tahoe 26.1 (25B78)

    2. Storage: I store my Premiere projects on an external drive. The media files I'm working with are split-some are stored on the computer's internal drive, and the rest are on the external drive.

    3. I have submitted crash reports multiple times.

    4. I only use the built-in MacBook monitor (no external displays).

    5. This freezing issue affects all of my projects.

    6. I installed version 25.6.6 and it works perfectly. I could just stick to that version, but the 2026 release has useful features that I would really like to keep using.

I was able to generate the sample file you requested. I will send you the link via direct message.

One more important detail to add: when I first start the program, I can use the Properties panel without any issues. However, after working on a project for a few minutes, trying to interact with the Properties panel again causes the program to freeze.

    Thank you for your help!

@Carla Giraudo Thank you for that additional information especially about how the panel starts as working and degrades after a few like that. oh and plus that sample file, that’s a great help! Appreciate it.

We’ll add this to the report and return once we receive any update.

    Thank you so much,
    Katie

When using the Properties panel (Transform, Edit Text, etc.), the program freezes and I have to force quit. I’ve been experiencing this issue since the 2026 update, and it persists with every new update. I am currently running version 26.2.0. My computer is a MacBook Pro with an Apple M3 Max chip and 36 GB of memory.

Any progress on solving this “not responding” situation?  I’m teaching video creation with Premiere Pro, but getting hung up in the Properties panel (as well as with many if not most of the pull down menus) is ruining my class.

Premiere version: 26.3.2.  For me, this all started a couple months ago.  My spring semester class ran just fine, but since then, editing in Premiere Pro has been awful.

    OS: Windows 11, build 26200.9168

GPU driver: Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics 128 MB

    video format: nothing unusual, 1920x1080.

I went so far as to give my laptop back to the Best Buy Geeks to work on it and make sure it is still operating sufficiently well, and they said there was nothing wrong with it that they find.  They know the system requirements for Adobe programs and assure me that my laptop is fully capable, which it had been for over a year before just a couple months ago.

    Thanks for working on this.

@Paul2339020355kc thank you so much for the information. We are having a hard time getting this kind of information to help us narrow it down. If you’re willing, a dump file collected while Premiere is Not Responding would be extremely helpful.

    • Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Click the Processes tab or Details tab.
    • Find and right-click the Premiere app.
    • Choose Create dump file.
    • Wait for Windows to finish and note the folder path shown on your screen.
    • Right Click generated Folder and Zip file

It can be quite large but I can DM you a private upload link to the Adobe dropbox.

We are trying to parse this from an issue where having Mouse Magnifier turned on in Windows severely slows down Premiere, which we are working on. There may be another issue where if you have multiple monitors that are set to different resolutions, it could cause some lag. The more information we have, the more likely we can identify the source of these issues.

    Thank you,

    Amy

    Hello everyone,

We are investigating another theory if you could answer these questions, it could really help us get to the bottom of this issue.

    1. Do you have Dual (or more) Monitors?
    2. What Resolutions are Each Monitor set to? (are they different?)
    3. Does changing the monitor resolutions to match each other improve your performance at all?
    4. Does working on a Single Monitor improve performance at all?

Also if you haven’t provided these specs, they can be very helpful. Premiere talks to your systems to function, so knowing what system it’s trying to talk to can help us know what to look at.

    • Premiere Version: How to find the exact version of Premiere you're using.
    • Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
    • GPU Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.
    • Video Format: If the issue relates to playback or export, please specify the format (and ideally share a sample video).

Thank you all for your help. We are working very hard trying to figure out the source of these issues and truly appreciate any and all information provided by users.

    Best,

    Amy

Hi there same issue here, already tried some of the same steps listed above to ressolve the issue but the issue remains present.

    Specs:

Lenovo Laptop Legion 7i 10th Gen

    Windows 11 Pro

64gb Ram, Ram available for Adobe CC apps 51. 12gb for Other

    Adobe Pr v26.3.0 (Build 93)

    NVidia Card RTX5090 v610.88

Video format doesn’t matter it happen in whatever format you are working from 4k to SD. The system lags no matter if my project is a quick 15sec timeline or an hour timeline. I’ve seen it lag a bit every now and then with the Effect Panel but that’s rare and not that commond as with the Properties Panel. I also checked if it was my Thunderbolt drive and/or cable and went local to my secondary internal SSD, and the issue remains.

The lag or freeze mainly happens with Text, adding shapes, masks, sometimes with adjustments of Clip scale or position but that one is more response than when working with text. Trying to create or edit text is almost unusable. Please help @Àdobe

I’m having the exact same issue. Whenever I go anywhere near the Properties panel the whole thing goes belly-up. It can be manipulating simple shapes, adjusting a title or resizing captions. It will go super laggy and then eventually freeze up altogether. It takes about a minute for the system to come back which gives me just enough time to save my work before it freezes up again at the merest hint of interacting with anything in it. It’s absolutely shocking. The amount it costs each month to have to put up with shoddy programming and dodgy updates. It shouldn’t have to be up to the user to troubleshoot settings, moving files into local folders and ensuring OneDrive doesn’t sync with it. For the price it is it should just work. Absolutely ridiculous. No wonder people giving up on it

    Hello @Luke283347971t3i

We really need to start getting the following information so we can narrow this down, if you have a moment.

We tracked what we believe is a similar issue down to having the Mouse Magnifier (or any accessibility feature) on for Windows machines and would be curious to know if that’s the case here or if this is a separate issue.

Thank you all for any and all information regarding this issue.

    Amy

Hi Amy. I appreciate the reply despite my mini rant. Here’s the answer to your questions:

    • Premiere Version - 26.3
    • Operating System - Windows 11 Business v25H2
    • GPU Driver - Nvidia Studio Driver v610.62
    • Video Format - 1080p, 16x9. Happens on all videos regardless of format/aspect ratio

I also do not use the Mouse Magnifier though whether that is enabled or not I have no idea.

I have since rolled the version back to 26.0 and so far it seems to be working at last.

    Thanks,

    Luke

@0xxz1yz Wanted to mention that we’d identified one cause of this happening from Windows Magnifier under Accessibility Settings. You can type ‘Magnifier Settings’ in the bottom search bar to bring that up. Sometimes it can be toggled on by other apps or games, so even if you haven’t personally toggled it on, try checking there.

Have you since updated to v26.3 I wonder, and still on-going?

Another user mentioned a recent July Windows update has also cleared their lagging issue if you’re specifically seeing any lag with that.

Adding this to bug report as we’re currently investigating this issue. I’ll provide an update once I receive that. Do let me know if anything changes for yours.

    Thanks for your post!

Hi @KatieToo, I am experiencing the same issue. I tried adjusting the magnifier settings and updating Windows, but it hasn't resolved the problem. I'm still encountering freezes with the latest update, version 26.3. However, I did not experience any freezes with version 25. As a teacher, I’ve noticed that my students are facing this issue as well.

    Hello @DRD_POA , @masato_2172 , @birdonawi, @cgchang  and @PulseBriefs

We have been tracking this issue, which persists in 26.3, and we are still trying to narrow it down. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I am wondering if you all could let us know if you think it’s related to the post below.

So far we have noticed it primarily on Windows PCs that have the Magnifier active. We are wondering if the issues you are facing fall into this same category as the issue linked, but would love if you would confirm, otherwise the search continues.

If you have not already shared a little about your system specs, the following information is always helpful for us to figure out where a software miscommunication may be occurring.

Thank you for your help and apologies for the ongoing frustration.

    Amy
