Playback/performance issue 25.1

Perplexed by a new playback/performance issue while editing a feature film. Hopefully someone can shed some light on the possible causes(s)!!  My workstation is an HP Z8 and I edit features and network shows using Premiere Pro. I like to generally stay updated on the app, currently I have v25.1.0 but I also have 24. 0.3 installed. I've been editing a feature without any issues since November 2024. However just last week I began having problems with Premiere freezing after about 5 seconds of playback. The app becomes non responsive and eventually crashes and I have to either force quit using task manager or just restart the machine.

I have 6 internal SSD's in the machine, I have the project file on one, the media cache on another, the audio previews on another the video previews on another, and the footage on another. My machine is fully optimized for editing and i dont run anything else on it. Because of all of this I have always enjoyed stellar performance. So I've been testing various components, looking for a bottleneck or other types of problems. So far, the drives check out fine. The cpu checks out. The RAM checks out.  I trashed my preferences and deleted the media cache. I disabled all of the plugins. Still the same issue. I even tried putting the project file on another disk.  So then I tried opening a new project and importing my project into it. It told me that the imported project was corrupted and it couldnt continue. My heart sank with this message but i knew I had backups. So i tried importing the backups. Same error message. I tried just importing my latest working timeline (sequence). Same error.

Then I had an idea, I moved the drives over to another computer, a consumer desktop (all specs below). Voila. Everything worked. The original project opened and I was able to move around on the timeline freely. I waited and it never crashed. It worked perfectly, which was weird because I never would have thought I could run Premiere much less edit a feature on a utility desktop computer that only cost me $300 used. It doesnt even have an aftermarket graphics card in it. Its just a machine I use for accounting and internet. This gigantic project ran perfectly.  Why did Premiere tell me (on the other machine) that the project was corrupt???)   I will probably try to finish the movie on this machine out of necessity, since I am almost at a locked cut. I do not however, look forward to doing any exporting from this machine. If anyone can help with suggestions I would be forever grateful. Specs for both machines are here:

Pressing "any" key is supposed to work. Glad it worked out.

Cheers,
Kevin

Shift is common to both Mac and PC so we usually say that, but the Alt should work the same. Glad yours is working now.

I think i finally got it. By holding shift while opening, and deleting the historical cache as well as all plugins, the project opened and is operating properly now. I did this before but I held ALT instead of SHIFT. It brought up the same dialogue box. But for some reason when I did it before, it didnt help. This time it did. Thank you!

Thank you, will try that now. One thing I just also noticed - because for the heck of it I am trying to open old versions of the project from a month ago. Same thing happens, it opens and scrubs for a few secs, then locks up and I have to force quit. (But remember, all my other projects open and operate just fine). Here's the thing I just noticed: when I force quit, Premiere Pro wont open again until I reboot. I click the app in the start menu or the shortcut icon and -- nothing happens. So thats another symptom.

Did not change anything. Thats what makes this weird. And something even weirder that I just discovered. I am opening other editing projects right now to test things out --- and the one I just opened is working fine. 4K footage just like my feature, just a different movie that I finished recently. No issues at all. SOOOO that tells me that my Windows system must be fine, the throughput seems to be fine, hmmm it totally points to something wrong with that particular session HOWEVER what doesnt make sense is why then, would that session play fine on my lower powered, consumer desktop, one that I have never even used Premiere on because i always assumed it would be underpowered.

Try pressing any key (Shift or Alt works) at launch to get the Reset Options dialog box. You can try deleting media cache from there. Did you do it from there? If not, it deletes your current media cache as well as the historical cache. That could be your issue. I hope it helps.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi @postinthewoods,

I read about your issue. I understand your problem and it sounds pretty frustrating. If everything was running OK, and then it started giving you trouble, did you happen to change anything on your system the week it started stalling out? Did you update Windows around then? Others have experienced a different bug with the update. Does the consumer machine have a different version of the OS or version of Premiere Pro? Let the community know. I hope we can help you. Sorry for the problem.

Thanks,
Kevin
