Premiere 26.0.2 crashes when importing footage.

Bizarre story. Editing a project was fine until I selected the automask tool in Premier 26.02.  Computer crashed. Several attempts just to open the Project again  resulted in complete PC crashes. Created a new project and attempted to import the old project resulted in another crash.

I then attempted to import footage into the new project. The PC crashed.

Finally the PC was locked in a recovery loop. Eventually had to reinstall Windows 11.

Reinstalled Adobe Cloud and Premiere . Now Premier opens but crashes the moment I import footage whether audio or video. Having now had a series of crashes,  I am getting the Windows recovery screen again. I am now a little nervous.

Machine is an XPS Dell 8930 with 32GB memory and a RTX 2020 Graphics card with 6Gb. 1 TB SSD drive with 3GB WD  HDD.

Ran the Dell online tests all good. Footage (Canon D7) imports into KDENLIVE happily but my project with captions is in Premiere.

Hopefully I have got this right:

Issue I cannot import footage into Premiere 26.02.  I had just installed Production Suite on the PC and had been working happily for two days until I used the automask function. The machine crashed. Subsequently whenever I open the project file. The machine would crash. I tried creating a new project and importing the old project in but the same machine crash occurred. After a few crashes my PC got stuck in a recovery loop which I could not get out of. Eventually reinstalled windows 11 and reinstalled cloud apps.  Today I had the same problem

Importing the footage in Premiere the machine would crash. I then downloaded  Premier 25.64. And attempted to import  a variety of footage in but the machine would crash going into recovery mode. I tried with Rush but in this instance only the application crashed.

    • Steps to reproduce – Don’t understand this requirement
    • Expected result –After all the various processes I opened the footage in Kdenlive and DaVinci Resolve and there was no problem with playback or import
    • Screen recording – I attempted this but the moment I import footage, be it stock footage or Adobe footage , the machine crashes totally.

I ran an online test with Dell and the PC passed all tests.

    • Adobe Premiere Pro version  26.02 & 25.64
    • Operating system –Windows 11 Home 25H2
    • Computer: Machine is an XPS Dell 8930 with 32GB memory
    • GPU driver version (Windows only) – Nvidia Studio 595.79 Geoforce RTX 2020 6gb GDDR6
    • Video format – Format does not matter.  I even used a clip supplied with Adobe tutorials and stock footage and the machine crashed.
    • Comparative information:  The software was working perfectly for two days until I made the automask selection. Having said that, the machine then had a complete reinstall of windows 11 and Premiere pro and the problem persisted.  I need also mention that copying the files and the project files to another computer with Premier 26 , they all import happily in Premiere. Which appears to tie it to this machine.  I am completely at a loss because as I say - Premiere was working happily until that automask selection.

I am currently editing in Resolve on the same machine in order to complete edit.

    Much appreciation

Which graphics driver are you using (Studio or Gaming and version number)?

    Hi @jasonr1988068

Welcome to the Premiere community. Thank you for taking the time to report a problem. It would help us if you could use the link " How to Report a Problem," which provides steps to provide more information that can help us identify the issue. Details such as what operating system you are using and what graphics driver your RTX 2020 has would be greatly appreciated.

    Here to help.

With Chatgpt I learned that I could go into software mode by disabling the display driver. This allowed me albeit with a single screen to run bothe versions of Premiere happily. I tested the graphics card with FurMark and it checked out fine so the only other issue was the driver. I gradually worked my way back to  Nvidia 580.97 and was about to give up when Chatgpt suggested and found the link for 537.58. After a clean install evrything worked. Including Automask. Needless to say I have to put the machine through its paces. Thanks to Victor for suggesting the DDU and evryone else who contributed. It was a long night, early morning and 23 hours later it appears to be fine. Chatgpt also explaing why other software was able to play the footage. It seems Adobe makes demanding use of cores.

It seems like you may have a hardware issue.

    Applications shouldn’t cause that behavior.

Agreed but I am trying to finish the project now in the free Da Vinci Resolve which is a bit of an inconvenient learning curve.

An addendum. It happens with Premiere 2025 and Rush. No matter what the footage is. Shoot or stock, it simply crashes. Tried playing footage in Da Vinci. No problem.

Tried to disable graphics card as per alt or shift but I did not get the software only option.

Hello, I suggest continuing with Premiere 25. I upgraded to version 26.0.2.2 on one of the machines, but this version still has bugs and the errors you reported. I use version 25.6.4 on all the production company's computers, and it works well without the errors you reported about the Nvidia driver. I'm using the latest one released in March, and it's working well, but you have to do a clean install using DDU to uninstall the old driver.

I’d be happy to stay on Premier 25 if I could get it to work. I have the same issues with the entire Adobe video range. But will attempt the DDU with the driver. Right now I’m working on da Vinci which is not a quick change for my brain ...but I need to carry on.  I would revert back to my old machine with Win 10 but the older versions of Premier are no longer available.

    Thank you
