Premiere 26.3.2 has many bugs. Timeline freezes, media stays 'pending' on selected clips, text graphics disappear entirely, audio plays while timeline is frozen

Immediately after updating to Premiere Pro v26.3.2, a large project now exhibits intermittent playback freezing and "Media Pending" states on specific clips during timeline playback. I reproduced the same issue in a test project, ruling out file corruption, cache, disk space, and missing assets as causes.  Here are the issues:

  • During timeline playback, playback freezes partway through the sequence. Audio continues playing while video freezes and the playhead stops advancing.
  • Scrubbing through the timeline after a freeze shows no video image.
  • Affected clips intermittently display a "Media Pending" placeholder instead of video. The "Media Pending" state is not consistent per clip. Two separate clips from the same source media display differently.  One works fine, the other says "Media Pending".

  • Text layers and video clips that displayed correctly at one playhead position disappeared (reverting to Media Pending) when the playhead was moved back by a single frame.  See attached screenshots.

I did the following in an attempt to troubleshoot:

  • Cleared cache
  • Shut down and fully restarted entire system, restarted Premiere
  • Played source files outside of Premiere to check for corruption. All played fine.
  • Confirmed plenty of space on external and internal drives
  • Checked system resource usage for spike during a freeze event. It didn't.

After some digging it was determined that the Video Preview files were causing many of these issues.

If you have exhausted all other troubleshooting methods, it could be worth backing up your Video and Audio Previews before removing them from your Media Cache location. They can be found wherever you have your Scratch Disks set to. Most of the time it will default to your Documents folder.

    Hello @spinachworld

I’m sorry to hear about these issues. We need a little more information to help us identify what’s happening.

Would you mind letting us know what version of Premiere you updated from? Did you go from 26.3 to 26.3.2 or from an earlier version? What was the last version where you didn’t experience these issues?

    • Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
    • Chip (Mac Only): What M-series chip are you using or do you have Intel and GPU?
    • GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.
    • Video Format: If the issue relates to playback or export, please specify the format (and ideally share a sample video).
    • Setup: How many monitors do you use and what are their resolutions?

If you are willing to share a sample video such as the one you used for the Test project you created, I could DM you a private upload link. It would be much appreciated.

    Hoping to help,

    Amy

    Hi Amy,

I updated from 26.3.  I update whenever a new version becomes available. I did not experience any of these issues previously, although I’ve encountered other bugs in many previous versions.

In general, my experience for several years has been that when I start seeing issues with whatever current version I’m on, I immediately check for an update. It's been a consistent pattern for me that when something starts to go wrong, I install the update, and the problem resolves. Many times I’ve had bugs that were immediately resolved by upgrading.

In fact before I upgraded to 26.3.2, 26.3 was starting to give me render errors and freezing.  It’s as if the old version stops working efficiently as soon as the update is pushed. This is also why I don’t roll back to previous versions, because I’d be trading the new set of problems for the old one.

    I’m on macOS Sequioa 15.7.9
    iMac Pro 3GHz 10-core, Intel Xeon W
    One 27” monitor 5120x2880

I’m not clear what you’re looking for in the sample video?

@spinachworld Thank you for sharing your specs. We would want the media files you are working with that are showing “Media Pending.” If one of these can be included with your project file that has the titles exhibiting the strange behavior, this could help us identify the issue.

I can assure you that we do not stop supporting previous builds that can still be installed through the Creative Cloud, and new builds have no impact on the performance of previous ones, but you are right that it is always best to upgrade if you’re facing issues.

I also hate to be a bearer of bad news, but you may want to look at upgrading your system before the 27 release.

I’m also going to have to upgrade my intel based iMac.  Let me know if you’d be willing to share one of your video files and your project and I can DM you an upload link.

    Best,

    Amy
