Premiere Captions make playback choppy/lagging

Hi there,

for this project I'm working on, I have to add subtitles to each clip.

Whenever I add subtitles to the sequence (via the essential graphics tab), the playback has micro-stutters every 1-2 seconds (video freezes for about 15-20 frames, then keeps playing). Audio plays back normally.

It's literally impossible to properly work like this.

As soon as i delete the subtitles from the top of the sequence, it plays back smoothly.

Technical Info:

- Adobe Premiere Pro version number: v 24.5

- OS: Mac OS Sonoma 14.5

- System Info: Mac Studio 22, Apple M1 Max Chip, 32GB RAM, and we are working on an EditShare server, connected via Thunderbolt 10gbit/s

- Video Format: 4K 4:2:2 10 Bit, mk2 MXF Files (Canon C300 Mark III, Canon C60),  Proxies in Apple ProRes LT

- Workflow details: We work mainly in Multicam Sequences with 2 cameras and an external audio recorder

- Steps to reproduce: I just setup a fresh project, imported all the files (about 3TB), and created Multicam Sequences for each day of filming. Then i put these Multicams into source monitor and created select cuts into new sequences.

Things I tried to fix this:

- resetting cache/preferences

- importing the whole Project into a fresh one

- flatten all the Multicam Clips in the edit sequence

- make offline and relink all the footage and proxies

My workaround for now has been pre-rendering the sequences to see if everything looks okay.

This is no solution tho, since everytime I make a change after pre-rendering, it stutters again at that spot.

Also this takes too much time.

Of course I could add the subtitles as a very last step but then i would still end up with that choppy playback.

Please fix this bug.

Kind regards,

Philipp

Thanks for filing your bug report, Philipp. It sounds like you found a bug report but still wish to keep this issue open. Is that correct? Let me know! Sorry for the frustration.

Hi Stan, thanks alot for your reply!
I'll come back to your list if I face this problem again.

The issues from my other bug report, which you were refering to, are still persistent.

Kind regards,

Philipp

Thanks for the good report and for following up with your workaround. Upvoted.

Is this also a workaround for your report here?

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/premiere-24-5-keeps-freezing-and-crashing/idi-p/14739121

Many users have reported slow performance with the new caption workflow, but not all users experience it. With very few exceptions, my attempts to replicate the problems have been unsuccessful.

This is my updated list of workarounds that at least some users said helped. You are "disabling the caption track" when it is not in use.

Sorry I just found a simple workaround: Just disable the subtitles (with "E") and it plays back smoothly.

When the edit is done, enable them again before rendering.

Still this is a bug that should be fixed.
