Premiere crashes after entering/creating a project

Hello Adobe Support,

I am experiencing a persistent and severe crashing issue with Adobe Premiere Pro on my MacBook Pro M4 Pro with 24 GB RAM and macOS 26.5.2.

Premiere Pro repeatedly crashes shortly after opening or working inside a project. The issue has occurred across multiple projects, different clients, and footage from different cameras and sources. At different points, Premiere has also crashed with brand-new projects and with little or no active editing.

I have already completed extensive troubleshooting:

- Cleared the Media Cache.
- Reset/trash Premiere preferences on startup.
- Launched Premiere with third-party plugins disabled.
- Disabled hardware-accelerated decoding.
- Tested different import methods, including File > Import instead of Media Browser.
- Closed the Media Browser panel.
- Tested multiple projects.
- Tested footage from different cameras, clients, and sources.
- Created completely new Premiere projects.
- Completely uninstalled and reinstalled Premiere Pro.
- Tested Premiere Pro 26.3.0 and 26.0.0. and older versions
- Used the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.
- Removed Premiere Pro, Premiere Beta, and Media Encoder with the Cleaner Tool.
- Reinstalled Creative Cloud and Premiere Pro from scratch.
- Restarted the Mac multiple times.
- Updated macOS to the latest available version.
- Created a completely new macOS administrator account and tested Premiere there. The issue still occurred.
- Tested Adobe Media Encoder separately. Media Encoder does not crash.

I have multiple macOS crash reports showing a consistent crash signature:

Application Specific Information: stack buffer overflow
Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)

The crash reports also repeatedly reference Adobe's mc_mfimport/media importing components.

I would appreciate investigation of the crash reports rather than repeating standard troubleshooting steps that I have already completed.

    Hi,

Thank you for continuing to investigate this.

    Regarding your questions:

    1. HEVC footage

I have worked with footage from multiple clients, cameras, and sources. Some projects may contain or have previously contained HEVC footage.

However, the crashes are not isolated to one specific media file or one camera source. I have also experienced crashes across different projects and media types.

I previously received a Premiere warning stating that a file required the HEVC codec. However, when I checked the file information in macOS, the file was reported as H.264 / MPEG-4 AAC, not HEVC.

I can perform a specific test with absolutely no HEVC footage connected or associated with the project/system and report the results.

    2. Third-party plug-ins

I have launched Premiere with third-party plug-ins disabled using the startup reset options.

I will also manually check for and completely uninstall any remaining third-party Premiere/MediaCore plug-ins from the system, rather than only disabling them on launch, and test again.

    3. Premiere versions

I have tested Premiere Pro 26.3.0 and Premiere Pro 26.0.0. and even couple 25. versions. There's not version that works better.

The crashing occurred on both versions. Rolling back from 26.3.0 to 26.0.0 did not resolve the issue.

    4. Project and media file locations

I work with multiple client projects, so the media and Premiere project files may not always be stored in exactly the same folder. Mostly all my project files are stored in Premiere pro folder on internal SSD.

I can test a completely isolated project where the Premiere project file and all associated media are stored together on the external SSD.

    5. Security and permissions

This is interesting because during troubleshooting I also encountered Adobe Creative Cloud installation Error Code 146.

    The installation log stated:

"Unable to move file... Try setting correct permissions to the specified file/folder or parent folder, so that admin has rights to modify it."

I resolved the installation issue and was able to reinstall Premiere, but Premiere continued to crash afterward.

Because of this previous permissions-related error, I agree that a system security or file permissions issue may be relevant.

I have also tested Premiere from a newly created macOS administrator account, and the crashing still occurred. But last time the project failed after 30 minutes of working on it.

Please let me know which specific macOS folders or Adobe directories you would like me to check for permissions.

    Thank you

    Hi @aciirulis,

Thanks for the follow up! This is great context for us to better assist you. Let’s try a few different things:

    1. Yes, please test and let us know regarding the HEVC. Does transcoding in Media Encoder help?
    2. Yes, please check and here is a link that may help to trouble shoot plug-ins.
    3. Thank for checking. After testing these other elements, restart the machine and try again.
    4. Can you do a test where the project file and the media are stored on different devices? For example, the project file is local on the computer and the media is on the SSD.
    5. Thanks for the information about Adobe Creative Cloud installation Error Code 146. There could be some security software preventing Creative Cloud from performing properly. Please see this link here to troubleshoot: Error 146 causes installation failure

    Hope this helps!

I am having that same problem with PP 25.6.6 on my M4 Max.  Have tried all of the same troubleshooting steps as Aciirulis. HELP!

    Hi @Daren Thomas,

Thank you for reporting this, and sorry you’re experiencing similar issues. Since you’re working with Pr 25.6.6, the team suggests trying to update your system to Premiere 26.3, and let us know if there is a change in performance.

Subsequently, can you let us know of the following information:

    • Does rolling back back to a specific version of Premiere help? If so, can you specify the exact version?
    • Is the Premiere project files and associated media saved in the same location where the footage is stored?
      • There is possibility the crashing is from security permissions when your system is attempting to writing (or overwrite) files.
    • Is there HEVC footage connected and/or associated with your system during these crashes? This includes in metadata. If so, does removing this type of footage resolve crash issues?
    • Are there plug-ins that remain installed on the system? If so can you try uninstalling all 3rd-party plug-ins?

The team hopes we can help you soon!

    Best,

    Jonathan

    Hi @aciirulis,

As the team continues to investigate can you please clarify:

    • Do you have any HEVC footage connected and/or associated with your system during these crashes? This includes in metadata. If so, does removing this type of footage resolve crash issues?
    • We understand that plug-ins are disabled upon launch, however are there plug-ins that remain installed on the system? If so can you try uninstalling all 3rd-party plug-ins?
    • Does rolling back back to a specific version of Premiere help? If so, can you specify the exact version?
    • Is the Premiere project files and associated media saved in the same location where the footage is stored?
      • There is possibility the crashing is from security permissions when your system is attempting to writing (or overwrite) files.

Sorry for the frustration. The team is here to help!

    Best,

    Jonathan

    Hey Jonathan

Thanks for reaching out.  I manage several editors, both internal and external for our company.  We maintain a fairly strict software release protocol and stay back on new software releases.  However, while we are all on Premiere Pro 25.6.6 we normally have the latest version installed on our system.  I had 26.3 installed recently but removed it when 25.6.6 would not load properly.  I have tried the above steps and reinstalled 26.3 with no success.  I got the error message on 26.3 as follows:  “One of the files this plug-in needed cannot be found, please reinstall or contact technical support for assistance”. Not sure what plug-in it is referring to.  I have disabled all 3rd party plugs and just did a fresh install from the CC app.

BTW, I can still launch PP 24.6.8 and it performs flawlessly.

    Please advise.

    Daren
