Premiere Pro 26.3 freezes when opening Preferences, Sequence Settings, or Effect Controls

Premiere Pro Version: 26.3
Operating System: Windows 11
Laptop Model: HP Victus 16-r0073cl
CPU: Intel Core i7-13700HX
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU + Intel UHD Graphics
RAM: 32 GB DDR5
Intel Graphics Driver: 32.0.101.6790
NVIDIA Driver: Studio Driver (latest available version at the time of testing)

Issue Description

Premiere Pro 26.3 frequently becomes unresponsive ("Not Responding") during normal use.
The freezes occur even in completely empty projects and are not related to media files, effects, or timeline playback.
Most commonly, the issue happens when:

  • Opening Preferences

  • Opening Sequence Settings

  • Opening Project Settings

  • Editing Effect Controls

  • Accessing clip properties

  • Interacting with interface panels

Windows remains fully responsive while Premiere freezes.

Troubleshooting Performed

I have already tested the following:

  • Reset Premiere preferences

  • Created a new Windows user profile

  • Disabled Hardware Accelerated Decoding and Encoding

  • Disabled Display Color Management

  • Removed and uninstalled Mister Horse extensions

  • Tested with empty projects

  • Tested with newly created sequences

  • Updated NVIDIA Studio Driver

  • Verified Intel Graphics Driver is up to date

  • Checked System Compatibility Report (no issues reported)

  • Moved projects outside OneDrive

  • Cleared Premiere cache and media cache

The problem persists in Premiere Pro 26.3.

Additional Information

When Premiere freezes, Windows Task Manager shows very low resource usage:

  • CPU usage remains low

  • GPU usage remains low

  • RAM usage remains normal

Using "Analyze Wait Chain" in Task Manager only shows Premiere Pro threads waiting on other Premiere Pro threads. No external processes appear to be blocking the application.

This suggests an internal Premiere Pro deadlock or freeze rather than a hardware limitation.

Important Finding

I installed Premiere Pro 25.6.6 (Build 5) on the same system.

Using the exact same computer, drivers, and workflow:

Premiere Pro 25.6.6 works correctly and does not exhibit these freezes.

The issue appears to be specific to Premiere Pro version 26.x.

Expected Result

Preferences, Sequence Settings, and Effect Controls should open instantly and remain responsive, as they do in Premiere Pro 25.6.6.

Actual Result

Premiere Pro 26.3 frequently freezes and becomes unresponsive when interacting with settings panels or effect properties.

Has anyone with a similar Intel UHD + RTX 4060 laptop configuration experienced this issue in Premiere Pro 26.x?

We have an update while we continue investigating this issue. Do any of you happen to have Magnifier enabled? One user reported back on another post that they found it to be the cause and disabling that helped.

    Appreciate your patience,
    Katie

HI, I tried this and it helped with the others versions - I will try in the latest during thr weekend

pdate or Switch Your Graphics Driver

An outdated or corrupt graphics driver is the number one reason CUDA or OpenCL fails to render the video image while audio plays perfectly.

    • For NVIDIA Users: Open the NVIDIA GeForce Experience app. Go to the Drivers tab, click the three dots next to the update button, and switch from the Game Ready Driver to the Studio Driver. Studio Drivers are specifically optimized for stability in Adobe software.
    • For AMD Users: Go to the AMD website and download the latest Adrenalin Edition WHQL driver for your specific graphics card.

    Bonjour,

    Configuration :

    • Windows 11
    • HP Omen 16-wd0045nf
    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
    • Pilote NVIDIA 592.27
    • Intel UHD Graphics
    • 16 Go RAM

    Solution actuelle :

    Hi @CamiloB,

Welcome to the Premiere forums! Thank you for providing all this information.

There might be a legacy background tool still operating. Can you please see if UpdaterStartupUtility (or Adobe Application Manager) is enable? If it is, we want to disable that task. Let’s try to the steps below:
    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    2. Click on Startup Apps on the left menu (the icon looks like a small speedometer).
    3. Find UpdaterStartupUtility (or Adobe Application Manager)
    4. Right-click it and hit Disable.
    5. Restart your computer.

Same issue. MacBook Air M5, struggling now to even open the project itself. One week ago had zero issues with the same workload on previous version. I’ll be downgrading.

    Hi @nolasito,

Sorry to hear that this is an issue for you too. The team is aware that this is occurring for Mac users as well. To better assist you and to help us understand the issue, could you please provide more detail:

    • Premiere Version: What is the exact version of Premiere you are using when the issue happens?
    • Operating System: macOS, along with the version.
    • Steps to Reproduce: A numbered list of the exact steps needed to replicate the issue.
    • Expected Result: What should happen after the final step?
    • Actual Result: What actually occurred?
    • Screen Recording: If possible, include a recording of your screen showing the issue.

Additionally, comparing when and where the issue occurs helps us narrow down the cause:

    • Does it affect all projects or only some?
    • Does it affect new, empty projects?
    • When did the problem first begin?

    Best,

    Jonathan
