Premiere Pro not generating audio waveforms for Canon C70 MXF footage

I'm having a persistent issue with audio waveforms not generating in Premiere Pro when working with Canon C70 MXF footage.

The video itself loads and plays normally, and the audio plays correctly, but the audio clips in the timeline remain completely blank with no waveforms.

A few details:

  • Canon C70 footage
  • 4K 10-bit MXF files
  • Original media is stored on an external Seagate HDD
  • Premiere's Media Cache Files are stored on my Mac's internal SSD
  • Automatic audio waveform generation is enabled
  • "Show Audio Waveform" is enabled in the timeline
  • There is plenty of available space for the media cache
  • Premiere shows no background activity for "Generating Peak Files" or "Conforming Audio"
  • I've deleted all media cache files and allowed Premiere to rebuild them, but the same issue continues
  • I've restarted Premiere and reopened the project multiple times
  • Video thumbnails/playback load normally; it's specifically the audio waveforms that won't generate

At first I thought the external HDD might simply be making waveform generation very slow, but Premiere isn't showing any waveform/peak-file generation activity at all. I've also left the project open for hours without the waveforms appearing.

Has anyone experienced this specifically with Canon C70 MXF footage? Is there a known issue with Premiere's peak-file generation or audio conforming with these files?

Any suggestions for forcing Premiere to regenerate the waveforms or determining why peak-file generation isn't starting would be appreciated.

Interesting update - I downloaded an older version of Premiere Pro, and imported a sequence as an XML. They have begun loading in the old version. But that’s not really a good solution moving forward either to have to do that with all my sequences.

Hi @nathanroels
Thanks for stopping by the Premiere forums and including such detailed information about your audio waveforms not generating with the Canon C70 MXF footage. I haven’t seen any reports specific to that as of yet, and hope to be able to sort this out.

I see you mentioned you’re on Mac, can you let us know what kind of Mac, chip, and if Silicon/Intel and what’s your current macOS version?

Pardon for more questions but it’ll help narrow things down:
- What version/build of Premiere are you currently having this issue happen in?
- Is this affecting all your Canon C70 MXF’s or just some?
- Do you have any proxies attached?
- Does the waveform load up in the Source Monitor at all on any clip(s)?
- Are you having this issue in other projects or just this one?

Something to test is taking one affected MXF, copy it to the SSD, and bring that into a new project to try to generate a waveform on. Does the issue still linger?

To note, I tried bringing in a similar type clip into v26.3.2 on my m3 Max mac on Tahoe and was able to see waveforms come up. I tried adjusting the track heights and zooming in/out but was able to see them.

We might request a simplified project with one or two of the affected MXF’s depending on your response back.

Hope to help!

Hi Katie,

Thanks so much for the response and for looking into this!

Here are the details:

  • Mac: 2024 iMac with Apple M4 chip (Apple Silicon)
  • Premiere version/build: v26.3.2
  • Canon C70 MXFs: This seems to be affecting all of the C70 MXF footage in this project, not just a few individual clips. Also in other projects.
  • Proxies: Proxies attached. Waveform does not show up when toggling proxies on and off.
  • Source Monitor: The waveforms do not load in the Source Monitor either.
  • Other projects: This is an issue in other projects as well.

The unusual part is that the footage itself loads and plays very well. The video is responsive and the audio plays normally, but the waveforms remain blank. Premiere also doesn't show any activity for generating peak files or conforming audio. I've already deleted the entire media cache and let Premiere rebuild it, but that didn't resolve the issue.

Thanks again for your help!

@nathanroels Thanks for those additional details and just need your macOS now.

It’s helpful to know that the issue occurs with all of the Canon C70 MXF clips in multiple projects, both in the Timeline and Source Monitor, and still plays as expected without waveforms visible.

The older Premiere version with an XML result is curious. if you go to Premiere > About Premiere on top menu after this other version is launched, let us know which build and version of Premiere these MXF waveforms worked in. I understand it’s not an ideal workaround or anything.

Can you try copying over an MXF to your SSD, make new project, import that clip and see if waveforms behave any differently and confirm?

Should that quick test fail to make waveforms as expected, I’d like to get ahold of one or two MXF files that are affected to have our team further test. You can DM me and either pass us a link from place of your choosing, like Google Drive, or I can DM you our Dropbox upload link to easily drag/drop onto.

Let us know!
