Solution: Sony A7S III audio shows “0 Hz / Unknown / Mono” in Premiere Pro 25.6.3 (Hardware Decode B
Posting this as a documented solution in case others run into the same issue.
Issue:
In Premiere Pro 25.6.3 (Build 2), native Sony A7S III clips recorded in H.264 10-bit 4:2:2 were importing with audio metadata showing “0 Hz / Unknown / Mono”.
No waveform was generated and no audio played back, despite the files being valid.
Clip details:
Resolution: 3840×2160
Frame rate: 23.976p
Audio (verified externally): 48,000 Hz – 16-bit – Stereo
The same clips played audio correctly in QuickTime, VLC, and DaVinci Resolve, confirming the media itself was not corrupt.
Solution:
Disabling hardware-accelerated decoding immediately resolved the issue.
Steps:
Premiere Pro → Preferences → Media
Disable Hardware-accelerated decoding (H.264/HEVC)
Restart Premiere Pro
After this, the clips correctly reported 48 kHz stereo audio, waveforms generated normally, and playback worked as expected. Reimport the clips and delete the ones that weren't working previously.
Conclusion:
This appears to be a hardware decoder parsing issue with H.264 10-bit 4:2:2 Sony A7S III footage in Premiere Pro 25.6.3, not a problem with the media files themselves.
Hopefully this saves someone else a few hours of head-scratching.
