System Freeze(Reboot Required) on Ryzen 9950X/RTX 5080 — unstable with 96GB DDR5 (Win 11 24H2/25H2)
Issue I am experiencing severe system instability and a massive memory leak while using Premiere Pro. Randomly during a session, the software freezes and becomes completely unresponsive. On Windows 11 25H2, Task Manager showed RAM usage maxed out at 90%+, whereas on other builds (24H2/23H2), the system would freeze even when RAM usage was stable at 50%–60%. Even after closing the program, the memory is frequently not released by the OS, necessitating 3–4 full system restarts daily to continue working. This happens whether I am working from Suite Studios (Cloud) or from local 2TB NVMe storage.
Steps to reproduce 1. Open Premiere Pro and load any project. 2. Add a text layer to the timeline and begin trimming the layer. 3. Continue standard editing tasks (scrubbing timeline, trimming other clips). 4. Observe the UI becoming sluggish, followed by a total system hang/freeze.
Expected result Stable performance and responsive UI during basic text manipulation and trimming, with proper system-level RAM allocation and release.
Actual result The system hangs completely, often requiring a physical power-down because the OS fails to release memory or recover, even when RAM usage is only at 50%–60%.
Adobe Premiere Pro version Currently on Premiere Pro 25.3 (Build 84). I have tested every version from 25.3 through 25.6.4 over the last 4 months with identical results.
Operating system Currently running Windows 10 (Clean install as of 1/26/2026). Previously tested clean installs of Windows 11 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2.
GPU driver version NVIDIA Studio Driver v591.74.
Video format H.264 MP4, ProRes 422 MOV, and Variable Frame Rate (VFR) footage.
Comparative information * Project Scope: This affects Premiere Pro mainly; it occurs in all projects, including brand-new projects.
-
Storage Impact: Affects both Suite Studios Cloud Storage and Local 2TB Storage workflows.
-
Timeline: Issues began 4 months ago immediately upon building the PC and upgrading to Windows 11.
-
Current Status: Since downgrading to Windows 10 on 1/26, the system is more stable. I had one near-freeze, but unlike on Windows 11, I was able to close and reopen Premiere without a full system restart.

Troubleshooting Attempted So Far
-
OS Versions: Clean installs of Windows 11 (25H2, 24H2, 23H2) and Windows 10.
-
Hardware Isolation: Removed one 48GB stick of RAM; currently testing if stability holds with a single module (runs better so far).
-
Software Tuning: Used Chris Titus’s debloat tool [https://winutil.christitus.com/userguide/microwin/] on Windows 11 24H2; issue persisted.
-
Plug-ins: Tested sessions with and without 3rd-party plug-ins; freezes still occurred.
-
Memory Speeds: Tested RAM at both 6400 (XMP) and 5600 MT/s.
-
Driver Protocol: Installed proper CPU/GPU/Motherboard drivers after every OS iteration.
