Text window deleting text edits when using production work flow

I’ve found that when I copy a clip that has been transcribed from one project to another project in a productions workflow set up, and then go back and reopen the original project, all of my text changes (speaker naming, text changes, text separations etc) in the updated version in the separate project will be deleted.

The problem seems to be caused by having two copies of the same transcribed clip open in separate projects.

this is in Premiere  26.5.2,

Mac OS 26.6.2

    Hello @Andrew C. Brinsmead

Thank your bug report and providing your information. I was wondering if you could clarify if the steps to reproduction I’ve written out below are correct?

    1. Import Clip into Productions and Transcribe
    2. Make a Copy of this Clip into another Project within the Production.
    3. Edit the Transcript of this Clip in one of the Projects with the other one closed.
    4. Reopen the Project with the Copied clip

Expected: Copy of Clip should adopt Edited Transcript

Actual: Copy of Clip overwrites Edited Transcript with original unedited Transcription.

    Followup Questions:

Is there anyone else working on the other project that has a the copy of this file? I’m wondering if Premiere is reading that copy as the most recent version somehow.

Would you mind letting us know what Chipset or GPU / CPU combo your Macs are running?

    Hoping to help,

    Amy

    Hi Amy,

thank you for your prompt reply looking into this!  As an unscripted editor, the functionality of the Text window (including the transcription of clips) is a vital part of my workflow!

Unfortunately I left out a couple of details in my original post, so thanks for prompting me to be more specific.

I’m working with dual source media (separate sound and multicam vision – in this case two cameras), so my process is:

    1. Ingest sound & vision in a rushes project (individual project for each day’s source media), as part of a larger productions project
    2. Transcribe sound only files (no transcription of camera audio, which is identical, but usually camera mics only)
    3. Sync sound & vision into a multicam clip in each day’s rushes project as a single full timeline for the entire day, containing all of the days sound & vision in synce, muting all camera audio so that only the matching audio clips are heard
    4. Subclip out each sequence (each scene) into a sequence of it’s own
    5. Convert the resultant subsequence into a multicam clip
    6. Copy multicam clip for each scene / story into a different project for editing into a sequence in the edit project.  During editing I will update the transcription file on each multicam clip as required (correcting text / naming speakers / splitting or merging dialogue to match required sound bites etc).  To correct the text, I will either change the text in my edit sequence, or I will match frame back from edit sequence to multicam clip, open multicam source clip in timeline & match frame back to source audio file (this is the cumbersome process required to change speaker names or to merge / split dialogue – this type of transcription correction can’t be performed on the transcription in the edit sequence the way that a text correction can).
      1. It’s worth mentioning here that the text tool can be quite flaky and prone to failure to work; fairly often I’ve found that either the text correction functionality becomes completely disabled or the text completely disappears from the text window – I’ve found that when this occurs, I can get the text window functionality to be enabled again by either: closing & reopening the text window, the project or the programme.  If these steps don’t work, I then have to fully re-launch the app while deleting my Premiere preferences and reset them after relaunching, then usually my text window functionality will return

The main problem that I have encountered is that if after following this process, I then reopen my original rushes project while my edit project is open, any text editing changes that I have made to the transcription in the duplicated multicam clip in my edit project will be replaced by the original unedited text transcription from the original version of the duplicated  multicam clip.  However, none of my markers in the duplicated multicam clip in my edit project will be changed by the presence of the original version of that multicam clip in its original rushes projects. This reversion to the original transcription is the only change that I have found in my edited sequences.

I have realised that the work around to this situation is to only use my source multicam clips from their original rushes project, not to duplicate them into an edit project and then edit from them, which is what I’m now doing, but unfortunately I can’t delete the duplicated  multicam clips that have already been edited into sequences.

I’m editing on a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro with 64gb RAM; Mac OS 26.6.2, Premiere 26.5.2.  I’m the only person working on this productions project

Thanks for looking into this! Please let me know if there’s anything else that I can tell you about my situation

    Cheers

    Andrew

I’ve just checked my media analysis & transcription preferences, which are  set to cache my transcription analysis in my dedicated SSD drive that I use for cacheing - I’m not sure what impact  this has on my situation.  I noticed that text reappeared in my text window after disabling “Media analysis” (after the 4th reboot to try to get the functionality to return to the text window - my entire transcription keeps disappearing!)
