Trim cursor remains stuck after Command-dragging an edit point; Selection tool shortcut does not reset it — Premiere 26.5.2 / macOS Tahoe

After Command-dragging an edit point in the timeline, the cursor remains displayed as a trim icon even after I finish trimming, click away from the edit, or attempt to manually invoke the Selection tool using its keyboard shortcut.

The tool’s behavior appears to return to normal in that I can click and drag clips, but the cursor will not return to the Selection arrow until another mouse interaction forces it to refresh.

System information

  • Premiere Pro: 26.5.2, Build 5

  • macOS: Tahoe 26.7.1, Build 25G241

  • Computer: MacBook Pro, 16-inch, 2021

  • Chip: Apple M1 Max

  • Memory: 64 GB

  • GPU: 32-core

  • Display configuration: Dual external displays

    • Apple Studio Display, connected via Thunderbolt

    • Dell P2720DC, QHD/WQHD, connected via HDMI

This is occurring in my dual-display setup. I have not yet isolated whether the display configuration contributes to the issue.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a sequence in the timeline.

  2. With the Selection tool active, hold Command and drag an edit point to trim a clip.

  3. Complete the trim and release the mouse button and Command key.

  4. Click away from the edit point.

  5. Invoke the Selection tool using its keyboard shortcut.

  6. Move the pointer over the body of a clip, away from its edit points.

Expected result

The cursor returns to the Selection arrow when the trim operation is finished and the Selection tool is active, provided the pointer is not positioned over an edit point.

Actual result

The cursor remains displayed as a trim icon.

Invoking the Selection tool through its keyboard shortcut does not reliably refresh the cursor. However, I can still click and drag clips as though the Selection tool is active. This makes it appear that the cursor graphic is stale rather than the trim tool itself remaining active.

Temporary workarounds

I have observed the cursor returning to normal after interactions such as:

  • Clicking and dragging in the timeline.

  • Moving the pointer over the Selection tool in the Tools panel.

  • Clicking the Selection tool directly in the Tools panel.

Simply clicking away from the edit or using the Selection tool’s keyboard shortcut does not reliably clear it.

Frequency / onset

I have noticed this repeatedly in my current installation. Premiere was updated approximately 21 days ago, but I have not confirmed the exact version in which the issue began.

The recording demonstrates the trim operation and the cursor remaining in its trim state afterward.

Thanks for the response! Answers below:

if you hit ‘v’ does it usually respond and return as it should or stay stuck on Trim?

    • Yes I feel like it does this after a period of time but I’ll have to pay more attention. I do feel like a lot of time passes before I notice it but I trim enough that I would have noticed more quickly if it were persistent.

When the cursor appears stuck, is it only the cursor icon that's incorrect, or does Premiere continue behaving like a trim tool as well?

    • it’s just the cursor that remains - the functionality is as it should be (click to drag, etc.)

Does this issue still occur with only 1 monitor, if you were to close out and disconnect the dual and try launching Premiere with 1 monitor, does this still happen?

    • it does not on one monitor! However, it also does not on dual monitors anymore (at the moment.) Granted, I have completed a deliverable and exported since so lots has happened since I recorded - but that just goes to show it’s fickleness?

Are any mouse/keyboard customization utilities installed (Logi Options+, BetterTouchTool, Karabiner, Wacom drivers, etc.)? OR using Jump or something like this?

    •  MX Master running via Bluetooth - no Logi Options+ installed for all sorts of other reasons - namely that I have had weird issues in the past.
    • Keyboard is a logickeyboard TITAN plugged in via USB C

And overall, if you create a new project with new sequence and import just a few sample clips to try trim again, does the behavior linger?

    • Next time this happens, I will try. It’s not happening with the same sequence now -- of course. haha

Also, do you happen to have any plugins installed and can you SHIFT launch premiere to tell it to temporarily disable and maybe also clear plugin cache to see if that clears it?

    • Several (noted below) and I will next time this happens but may be worth noting that this feels like a new issue and I haven’t previously seen this before recently.

@DavidParke Thanks for taking the time to answer and any testing. The fact that the editing behavior itself remains correct is helpful, as it suggests the issue may be limited to the Timeline cursor display rather than Premiere remaining stuck in a trim state.

Since the issue is currently intermittent and isn't reproducing consistently, the next time you notice it could you try a few quick checks before doing anything else:

    • Does the cursor immediately correct itself if you move into another panel and then back into the Timeline?
    • Does maximizing/restoring the Timeline panel refresh the cursor?
    • Does temporarily moving the Timeline to the other monitor change the behavior?

If the issue is visible, could you grab a short screen recording using full screen and showing:

    • the Command-drag operation,
    • the cursor remaining in trim mode,
    • the cursor correcting itself when moving into another panel?

Also, if possible, note whether the Timeline is on the primary or secondary monitor when it occurs or happens to be one monitor again.

Noted on the plugins, make sure those are up to date and if nothing else, you can always SHIFT launch Premiere and select that toggle checkmark to have it temporarily disable those and load the project for further testing.

Here’s hoping Premiere stays behaving in the meantime. It definitely sounds finicky and inconsistent, so I’ll keep an eye and leave this post open to continue updating us if it returns.

    Appreciate that update!

    Hi @DavidParke

Thanks for stopping by the Premiere forums and providing thorough details about your Command drag issue in Premiere v26.5.2. I did review what was happening in your screen recording, so thanks for that as well, very helpful. Also, I noticed near the end when you bring that cursor up towards the top menu and across source monitor, it changes back to the regular selection tool. (unless you hit a shortcut or something I’m not aware of) This leads me to think it is a timeline related.

We did an initial testing on our mac in that same version, but it was not recreating the stale state with Trim cursor icon, so wondering what else might be missing. We may want to request the project in question having that happen to see if it triggers there. I don’t even think we’d need the media, just opening project and testing trim on the timeline.

And speaking of shortcuts for selection tool, if you hit ‘v’ does it usually respond and return as it should or stay stuck on Trim? I did see you mentioned it does not refresh the cursor state reliably, but is it most of the time working, out of curiosity.

Some additional follow up questions below:

    • When the cursor appears stuck, is it only the cursor icon that's incorrect, or does Premiere continue behaving like a trim tool as well?
      • I noticed in the recording that, despite being the trim icon, it seemed to move the clips and perform as if it was another one like selection tool.

    • Does this issue still occur with only 1 monitor, if you were to close out and disconnect the dual and try launching Premiere with 1 monitor, does this still happen?

    • Are any mouse/keyboard customization utilities installed (Logi Options+, BetterTouchTool, Karabiner, Wacom drivers, etc.)? OR using Jump or something like this?

    • And overall, if you create a new project with new sequence and import just a few sample clips to try trim again, does the behavior linger?

Also, do you happen to have any plugins installed and can you SHIFT launch premiere to tell it to temporarily disable and maybe also clear plugin cache to see if that clears it?

Let’s start there, let us know the results of above and if you need a private upload link sent for the project file, if able to share.

    Hope to help!
    Katie
