Unable to create transcript from a proxy with the original offline (23.5)

For whatever reason it doesn't seem like this is possible in 23.5. If the proxy is imported directly into premiere with no high rez original attached/linked then it'll transcribe normally. It'll transcribe normally when there's an original with a proxy attach, but if the clip is a proxy and the original is offline then transcripts will not generate. Hitting generate after the language/speakers pop up appears just kicks you back to an idle transcription panel.

This limitation/bug is a bit problematic for long form offline workflows where the editors only have access to proxies on the storage, and since this is an offline workflow we can't work with the proxies directly or else there'll be scaling issues during finishing.

The only workaround we can find is bascially generating the transcripts upon ingest which is a bit less than ideal. Its strange since static transcripts can still be generated with these proxy files if in a sequence, but regular transcripts cannot. I'm not sure if this is by design or if this is a bug?

Hi. I've come across this same issue in Premiere Pro v 24.0. As an editor, my current workflow is that the the original media is ingested and proxies made (in USA) and then I am sent the project file and proxy media (I'm working in UK). I am working with the original clips but with only the proxy files attached. As I don't have access to the original files I can't transcribe any of the media.

The only (long) workaround I have found is to take a clip, export the audio to a wav file with each channel of the original mapped to a channel of the wav. Then re-import the audio file and merge with the proxy clip. Then the transcribe feature works. But I'm not sure what happens when I attach full res media. Does the audio disappear? Alternatively you can create a 'source' sequence of the clip synced with the new wav file, and edit or copy and paste from that and that becomes the final audio.

Also the automatic waveform generation doesn't work if I only have proxy files attached. It generates waveforms on the fly when I playback but not for the whole clip in advance. This slows down locating sections of talking via waveforms.

The new source translate feature is really great. A real shame I need the original clips attached for it to work.

Hey, thanks for bringing this to our attention. It does look like a bug, so we're investigating it now.

Also just one other point... this limitation/bug makes utilizing the text editing feature on LucidLink with projects that have originals/proxies attached pretty difficult. It's the same issue as "automatic waveform generation" since it'll force a full download of the original media in order to generate the transcripts.
