Unable to move some captions to different tracks, but can move others.

I am struggling to move captions from one track to another for different styling. I began being able to freely move one speakers captions onto their own track, then all of a sudden I was not able to move them, only for when I tried to drag an drop the caption, it would open a new track and place the caption on there. Then I found that some would be able to be moved around. I then restarted PP as this is usually a way to make it behave. Didn't work. I then restarted the machine. Didn't do anything. Checked I have the latest PP, didn't, updated and this hasn't fixed the issue.

Please see the attached video for reference.

Hi @lfb_billy

Thank you for reporting a problem and sorry for the frustrating workaround you had to do to get them to work.

How were these captions created? Where they all typed out or created from a transcript? Are all of the caption tracks Subtitle Format? (You can check if you right-click on caption track name > Track Settings > Format)

Do you still have a project that is exhibiting this behavior and would you be interested in sharing so the team can take a look? I can message you if so.

Sorry for the frustration,
Dani

So I was creating short form content from a longer video for the social media channels we run. Each set of edits run for around 30-45 seconds. I had 6 videos edited together on one timeline and I got through two of those before I ran into my first problematic caption. Because I needed to deliver these today the only real workflow I could see getting me through it, was to allow it to create a new track and set that track style individually. Ending up with around 18 caption tracks (sarcastic double thumbs up). I say this because a screenshot of this would probably not be possible. Anyway, the amount is obviously dependent on how fast these people speak. And they speak fast, so there are quite a few. Not to mention each one is usually a max of 16 characters. Yey verticle video!

As for version, I am running the most up to date. The ability to have multiple tracks visible was a game changer, but I guess be careful what you wish for haha.

I hope any of this can help shine a light on the issue. Could it be a preference thing?

@lfb_billy,

I got home and gave this a go. It is behaving for me so far.

I agree that targeting appears to have no relevance to drag-move.

There was a bug in 23.x or so that was  problem for moves, and required copying/deleting.

I assume you are in version 25.3 or so, and that you are in a version that allows having multiple tracks visible.

How long does it take for the problem to happen? How long is your timeline/how many captions?

Stan

Thanks Stan, the track targeting shouldn't affect this as I am not copy and pasting. Or at least to my understanding of that fuction at least. I am simply dragging and dropping from one track to the next. Unless I've accidentally activated some obscure esoteric setting via a single tap keyboard shortcut. Which for Premiere Pro, would not be at all surprising.

@lfb_billy,

Away from my PC. I know exactly what you mean, but don't recall what works.

first pay attention to track targeting. I'll write later when I've had a chance to check this out.
