The Substance team are continuously working on the rendering engine to improve its performance, and there was a big change in the last (v2.1) update. The intention was to speed up rendering, and that's what I'm seeing. That you saw worse performance will be important for the team to know about. Send your Stager logs to substance3D-bugs@adobe.com with a description of what you encountered so they can check it out.

Only real-time ray tracing will give you an accurate preview of how the scene lighting will render, but unless you have a very powerful system it is very hard to adjust lighting and Stager may have difficulty keeping up with what you are doing. Every time you make any change to a light or the position of an object, the ray tracing starts from scratch. If you're on a system with minimum specs, that's going to be a very slow way to work.

It's better to make all your adjustments with ray tracing turned off, switch on ray tracing to check how things will look, then turn it off while you tweak light positions, etc.
