Groups randomly shown/hidden when trying to show/hide other groups

I work with scenes that have a simple white background; global and a single environment light; and anywhere from hundreds to thousands of small elements ( that usually share from a set of 10-20 materials.

When I have a file that has grown to thousands of elements, I notice that, even with very few elements visible, when I go to hide or show groups, the "hidden" icon will cascade across multiple groups, some of which appear or disappear seemingly at random.
