No Self-Shadows on material

I'm rendering using ray-tracing a substance designer material placed on a cylinder; although, the height map from the material is not casting self shadows only the cylinder is causing shadows ?

It maybe the hight map is an issue but usually there would be some self shadowing.

@JMathews  I have an environment light and two lights. One render is from a material render preset which comes with Stager, there is no self-shadowing. The second image is from my own material although the height map is not as strong, I would think there still should be some self-shadowing.

Personal Material Render (RayTracing ON; Displacement ON including normals)

Preset Material Render (RayTracing ON; Displacement ON including normals)

Any chance you're able to share some screenshots of what you're seeing?  It's hard to know what the problem is from the text alone.

  • Are you using a custom material?
  • Does it have height only or height + normal maps?
  • Is displacement on or off?
  • Are you using a physical light, IBL environment light, or both?

Here's a quick gif of a Substance material with height map + displacement turned on.  You can see editing the light that it is self shadowing correctly.

Same scene, with displacement turned off.  The sphere still has a self shadowing effect where the normal/height would be, but no silhouette change without the displacement.

There ares some changes for Real time shadows for environment lighting

in new updated version. May be you can use new feature to find a solution

Please review Version 1.2.0 | Substance 3D Stager (adobe.com)

I'm using 1.2.0; I don't think that Stager does self shadows for height maps, only shadows for the object to which the material is applied.
