Color Picker Bug on Arch Linux (GNOME) and Ubuntu Latest LTS (GNOME)

Hello, I purchased Substance Painter 3D Steam Edition and installed it on Arch Linux (GNOME) and on the latest 64-bit version of Ubuntu LTS (GNOME). I am encountering an extremely annoying issue with the software’s color picker.

The bug manifests differently depending on the distribution :

For Arch Linux – GNOME  :

When I click directly on the color, the widget does not appear at all—the click seems to do nothing. When I use the eyedropper tool, the screen turns black until I select a color (which ends up being black since the screen is black). After that, the screen returns to normal. This makes the software practically unusable.

For Ubuntu LTS (latest 64-bit version) – GNOME :

When I click directly on the color, the widget appears correctly and works as expected. However, when I use the eyedropper tool, the same bug as on Arch occurs.

Note : When I refer to the color and the eyedropper, I mean the main color picker as well as all the settings used to modify a material (textures, etc.).

Additional note : On both Arch and Ubuntu, the background color picker in the settings works correctly, but the eyedropper does not and causes the same issue described above.

Kind regards,

Picsou

I’m also having this bug on Arch linux (Cachy OS).

When I click on the color, 99% of the time it does not open the color selector. Very few times it opens, but only once. After that, it does not open again.

Another interesting thing is, when I try to change the background color from the settings, the color picker works just fine.

Please let me know if you need any kind of logs or anything that helps with debugging.

Update: I did a reinstall of Arch (still Cachy OS) but this time I installed KDE (plasma) and I can confirm the color picker opens 100% of the time.

For reference, before I was using Gnome.

Hi Picsou,

Thank you very much for your detailed report.

We are aware of the Color Picker issue with Linux and we’re investigating. That said, we don’t reproduce the color picker not appearing, so we’ll also keep that in mind.

Best regards,

Thank you for answering so quickly !

Oh perfect, then I’ll wait for a patch ! But I just have a few more questions : have you tried reproducing the widget bug on Arch Linux specifically ? Because this particular bug only occurs on Arch Linux and Ubuntu 26 Beta (which is expected to be very close to the final release).

So, to recap :

OS’s where the bugs occur (Color Widget Bug and Color Picker Bug (All OS’s are on GNOME environment) :

  • Arch Linux : Widget and Color Picker bugs
  • Ubuntu 24.04 : Color Picker bug
  • Ubuntu 26 Beta : Widget and Color Picker bugs

We’ve tried to reproduce the bug on Manjaro (based on Arch). We’re looking for solutions!
