💡 Feature Suggestion: Technical Illustration Content Type
What I'm suggesting: A "Technical Illustration" or "Schematic" content type, to expand Firefly's capabilities for design and product visualization
Why it matters:
- Fills the gap between Photo and Art modes
- Perfect for product designers, engineers, architects
- Faster ideation without jumping straight to CAD
The problem it solves: Right now we go from rough sketches → straight to expensive CAD time. This would give us that middle ground for quick, dimensionally-aware concepts.
Currently, the "Photo" and "Art" content type settings are excellent for their respective purposes. A third option focused on generating images with greater dimensional and structural integrity would be a valuable addition. This would allow users to create more precise drafts and conceptual illustrations, which would be highly beneficial for product designers, engineers, and architects in the early stages of a project.
Even if it doesn't offer the precision of dedicated CAD software, this feature would significantly streamline the ideation process by enabling the rapid creation of accurate conceptual visuals. Currently, professionals often face a bottleneck between initial brainstorming and formal technical documentation - they either sketch rough concepts by hand (which lack dimensional consistency) or jump directly into time-intensive CAD modeling for what should be exploratory ideas.
A technical illustration mode would fill this critical gap by generating visually coherent diagrams that respect basic engineering principles like proper proportions, consistent perspective, and logical assembly relationships. This would allow teams to quickly iterate through multiple design concepts, communicate ideas more effectively to stakeholders who may not read technical drawings, and make informed decisions about which directions warrant full CAD development.
The time savings would be substantial - instead of spending hours modeling a concept in CAD only to discover fundamental issues, designers could rapidly generate and evaluate multiple technical illustrations in minutes. This accelerated feedback loop would enable more creative exploration while maintaining enough structural integrity to ensure the concepts are grounded in physical reality rather than purely artistic interpretation.
Has anyone else felt they would benefit from this? If like my idea I'd love to hear your feedback and any suggestions, I'd love to hear if this would be useful for any of your projects!
