3d model layers with effects

Effects on 3D model layers are not available yet. There is a workaround using a solid with a calculate effect on it to create a copy of the 3D layer, which you can then apply effects to. 

Why can't adobe just do this workaround for now? Can't they create an under the hood version that does this so we can use effects on 3D layer? If a permanent solution is intenstive to code at least while we wait this will work the same?
