First of all, thank you so much for jumping right in and trying Substance Material support!

I get exactly what you're asking for—you don't necessarily want to keyframe the material changing, but you want to expression link multiple Mesh Selecftions together. We do support Copy/Paste for the whole Material Assignment category, so you could copy the group or just the Material property and paste it on other layers to override those materials. Does this help you?
