Dynamic Link between AE projects

This might be a long shot and I dont know if its technically possible to implement, but I think this would be a major improvement to after effects as a whole.

I think the easiest way to explain it is looking at the dynamic link feature between premiere and AE, but from AE projects to AE projects.

I would have plenty of usecases for this and I it would elevate professional workflows into new heights.

Just like having your own library of functions in coding, that you can link in multiple scripts, updating or adding new logic to the source function which automatically integrates in the scripts where its linked to. In this case the function would be an After effects project that you can reuse and implement in other projects and automatically updates in all linked projects if theres changes to the master project.

Reallife example: I have a beverage flatlabel that I wrap around a beverage can with UV Map. I use this Label in multiple projects, since theres plenty of different campaigns and animations where this can is animated differently and set into different scenes.

everytime anything on the master flatlabel changes, or we have to translate it into different languages for local campaigns, then I have to manually update and import the label project in ALL my different campaigns to update the Label there. If this Live Link would be a feature, then I could just do the changes in the master file and it automatically implements into all projects.

This could also be further expanded in a way like Mogrts, that you can even control certain properties when its imported/live linked from the master project, without manipulating the actual master project.

Obviously this would be a pretty major feature, but Im certain that this would have a huge impact on general user experience and complex professional workflows.

Oh my god, yes please, in the age of making 300 different versions of the same animation by 10 different people it would make my life SO MUCH BETTER.

I would even be satisfied if After Effects let you import a Mogrt file to use it like it's Premiere and then I can just update that Mogrt.

Can we rename this thread Request: After Effects Productions or something. I think it needs a catchier name.

AE desperately needs a “Adobe After Effects Production” overhaul. Copy the ideas and features from a Premiere Pro production and implement them in After Effects. The higher up I move in AE world, the more I bang my head against this limitation. I just end up passing the same project collects around and end up with a folder titled “Imported” that is 50 folders deep of the same comps imported over and over again when there is an update from another artist. It creates a huge bottleneck around one artist when you can’t efficiently farm out pieces of the project or reliably link to one media library.

If I could get one feature into AE2026 it would be THIS. The roto enhancements are nice but this is actively ruining my life.

If you can believe it, I asked for that on a community call and a couple of months later it was already there.

Magic.

@jenkmeister17177426  Great! It would really be a much appriciated update, even if there is not enough requests for it.
It will help remote artists working with collaborators, also could be used as dynamicaly instancing a comp across multiple Ae projects with the option to convert it from linked to embeded for local editing.

Really appreciate the feedback and request for this. This is something we are discussing internally. No idea yet if/when it'll see the light of day, but we do hear the request and hopefully it is something we can deliver at some point in the future.

Even the simple ability to import mogrts and use them would be a game changer.

As I've grown professionally, working with larger teams of artists, the lack of this functionally has increasingly a huge gaping hole in my workflow. I know Team Projects exists but was designed with Premiere in mind and doesn't do anything useful like comp locking or the like for After Effects. I don't know of anyone who has had a good time trying to implement that for AE and from what I understand its not reccomended.

A library or link function would be a huge benefit to the AE community. tagging  @jenkmeister17177426  for vis.

I'd love to know if the Adobe team is working on this ability to link AE projects dynamically.

I head an animation team, and this is our biggest obstacle. If someone needs to update one project, we have to import the new update and swap out all the compositions. This becomes tedious when 5 or so projects need to be updated. We've developed our own shortcuts, creating scripts to swap compositions thoughout the entire project, but would be a huge time-saver if we can just link AE project files.

I've gotta say that it's pretty ridiculous at this point that After Effects doesn't have a link or reference project feature.

If you're collaborating with several other artists at any given time, prerendering or important projects is such a stupid, early 2000's standard way of working, and I've used AE professionally since 2002.

3D apps can reference models, Photoshop can dynamically reference other psd files.

YOU CAN IMPORT AEP FILES INTO PREMIERE THAT UPDATES AUTOMATICALLY!!!!

But no, After Effects can only import?

What year is this again?

What’s particularly bewildering about this is the fact that of course After Effects links/references ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ELSE into a project (with the obvious exception of procedural content and effects). Yet it can’t reference its own native file format.
