I think you are right that this is an uncommon way when working with shots. Thats why i wrote "sequences" first.

I split one long shot into several sequences because of technical needs. I then load each sequence separatly but have to mix the passes also inbetween.

What you suggest is a really uncommon way of compositing. A composite is done on single shots not entire timelines. Sure there's finishing for an entire sequence but those adjustments typically don't need the individual passes again.

But if it helps with what you do in you projects you can definitely apply what I suggested in my comment above. Create a comp for each shot with all the passes separate and create an Essential Graphics dropdown or slider selector that will solo the selected layer. Then you can create a main comp with all the shots and link their EG properties to the same effect but in that comp. Then put that selector effect in the main comp's EG panel and as a result that comp can now be used anywhere and be duplicated to show different passes.

If it didn't make a lot of sense I can share a dummy setup if you'd like.

Yes i meant multiple shots with same passes.
Putting all shots into one composition next to each other, and then be able to use this composition with an EXtractoR multiple times for different EXR passes.

Why would you have multiple sequences with the same layers? Perhaps you mean same passes but different shots? Anyways, I think you could possibly do something clever with Essential Graphics to make a selector for use outside the composition. This is something I often do for using mattes from a comp outside of it without having to duplicate it and create separate dependencies.

I don't think that's feasible. It would require to change the whole way how AE treats footage and layers and the associated buffers.
