P: Cull images during import

I wish, I could rate my picture using my evaluation-stars and -colors directly during the import process and adding specific meta-tags maybe just to one photo (and not the entire import). For instance: I am shooting all day for 5 different projects - they all mix on one SD-card. Coming back, I have to go thru the import-process 5 times, looking thru all the pictures over and over again to sort out the pictures for these five projects. Why can ́t I do this straightaway during import? Am I over looking something already there in LR?I hope, you can understand my wish.

Close to this check/unckeck button should be a button to select stars to filter.

I don't wish to use this workflow for a full cull of my photos.  Just to import a select few for a quick turnaround.  I still want to import all my photos after the ice hockey game when time is not so critical.

Hi, is it possible to set a filter so Lightroom only imports starred photos? I shoot ice hockey and the client wants me to deliver a small set of photos within the game time. I only have a few minutes between the periods and importing all photos takes too long!  I can rate photos in my Nikon Z9, Lightroom will import these rating and apply them to the photos no problem, but why can't Lightroom see the rating during the import screen?

Unfortunately, it's not possible to filter by star rating in the Import window.

You can greatly speed up Import by setting Import: Minimal or Import: Embedded & Sidecar.

Alternatively, if you're shooing JPEGs, you can use File Explorer to open the folder on the card containing the photos, then use File Explorer in View > Details mode with the Rating column to sort the photos by rating. Then select all the photos with the desired rating and drag them to the Lightroom icon in the dock, which will open the Import window with just those photos selected.

Having the ability to view and select the starred images (you've already made in camera) in the import window of Lightroom would be game-changing. This would save a lot of time while on set or even at home. As of now, we can only categorize post-import but to have the opportunity to do it during import, would be extremely beneficial. Not only for desktop users but iPad users as well.

What: When importing images into Lightroom Classic, it would make so much sense if image ratings were shown beneath each image in the import window; with a filter that enables users to view/import only the images that have a rating.

Why: Many camera bodies now have in-built rating tools available, allowing photographers to preview images while on-set / on-location either via the viewfinder/monitor, and 'star' all images that are tack-sharp, have a good composition, or similar. But, when it comes to the import process, these ratings aren't shown - meaning a user either needs to re-review all of the images within the import window, OR, import all of the images (of which there could be thousands), to then have to wait for this larger-than-needed import to be processed, just to then delete the non-rated images.

How this would improve LR / the UX: Having to import all images on a card/drive into LR, just to then be able to see rated images, is not a very efficient workflow. It uneccessarily increases SSD writes, increases the time needed for media offload, sometimes causing an import to take 5-10x longer than it would if only the rated images were being imported. If this feature existed, it would allow users to get only the best / pre-approved images imported from a shoot, while significantly decreasing offload time, reducing the data written to the internal SSD, and speeding up the preview creation process (Standard/Smart Previews etc).

never once in all my decades working with photographers have i seen one edit images using the viewfinder. And even if they were to do so, not a single one would ever trust that process enough to not import all.

I would like to have an option to filter starred images before importing them into LR catalogue.

I produce a lot of images during the shoots especially during fashion catwalks and start some of the best ones in the camera but I still have to import all the images to see which ones are starred and delete the rest. I think it would be super timesaving having such filter during import process available.

It would be awesome if in the import dialogue there would be an option to sort by rated only.

For better understanding:

On a documentation with fast delivery I rate my photos in cam. But I'm shooting tons of photos. So at the moment I'm importing (+copying) all the photos. But first I have to import ALL and copy ALL, the moment this is done I filter them by rated pictures and ignore all other. So if it would be possible in the dialogue to filter by rated photos, that would be awesome. Instead of copying 500 pictures, I just would need to import and copy those 30 rated photos.

Thanks!

"not all cameras use the same "standard" which makes it hard."

I've helped a number of people on these forums over the years with getting in-camera ratings being seen in LR (after import). I don't recall any cameras using other than the industry-standard XMP:Rating field. (But it's certainly possible some troglodyte manufacturers don't follow the standard.)

This is a 4 year old thread that just blew up my inbox.

The topic of why not filter the ratings your camera gives might be because not all cameras use the same "standard" which makes it hard.

PhotoMechanic and... Adobe Bridge that comes with LR can help with this.

I use bridge for most stuff. PM is great when you need to tag too (like for a news wire). Both look at the metadata and use the embedded JPEG for very fast preview. Select the ones in bridge and drag them into LR. You end up on the import page with just the ones you want. I always do a first pass in Bridge.
