P: Ability to cull images through rating, color, picks during import

I wish, I could rate my picture using my evaluation-stars and -colors directly during the import process and adding specific meta-tags maybe just to one photo (and not the entire import). For instance: I am shooting all day for 5 different projects - they all mix on one SD-card. Coming back, I have to go thru the import-process 5 times, looking thru all the pictures over and over again to sort out the pictures for these five projects. Why can ́t I do this straightaway during import? Am I over looking something already there in LR?I hope, you can understand my wish.

Please add a "Cull" module to Lightroom that a photographer can choose to use before Import where you can open up a folder of photos on the hard drive and have thumbnails shown using the JPEG previews stored inside Raw files.  Let the photographer use all of the ratings (stars, colors, pick flags) to apply to photos then use those ratings to decide how to move into the Import process from there.  Have Lightroom offer to only import photos with certain ratings, or to import all photos but only build the previews (both standard and smart) for the photos with certain ratings.  This would speed up the process of culling photos tremendously and prevent people from turning to products like Photo Mechanic to do that portion of their workflow.

Very happy to talk in more detail with Adobe about this idea if you would like.

A pre-import "cull" mode would be great.

I think my idea is a bit different here from what Joachim is suggesting.  It isn't just the ability to apply ratings as part of the import process.  I want to have the options for not even importing photos that don't make the cut and/or controlling which photos will have standard and/or smart previews generated.

Jeff, count me as ME TOO on your suggestion. I use Fast Picture Viewer because using Lightroom to cull is self-torture. I would love to have a cull module.

Frankly though, I am worried about the future of LR, based on all the problem posts I see on this site.

Agree that Jeff's idea is different than Joachim's.
Also a big fan of Jeff's idea!

The Cull Module is BRILLIANT!   PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add this.  Would be an excellent way to speed up my Lightroom Workflow.  I've been taking a look more at Luminar Photo (competitor to Lightroom) as well as Photo Mechanic for one reason only--culling takes too long in Lightroom.  It's just unreasonably slow.

I've started using FastPictureViewer (~$50) to cull. You can use the X to mark delete and Ctrl-X to actually delete. That gets me started before I go into LR. A culling module in LR would be better though.

I would like to add to this:

I want Photoshop Lightroom to find the areas of the photo that are in focus and mark them when nothing is in focus.

Photoshop already does this automatically for focus stacking.

I want it applied in Lightroom to cull photos.

Please push this idea. Adobe already knows how to do it.

This is a most-needed feature. LR import feels like a lowest gear in a vehicle that doesn't have enough torque in any gear.

As a sport shooter, there are potentially hundreds of images that do not need to be imported (or previews built). Would be great to only import what I need.

The #1 issue overwhelmingly with Lightroom is speed.  And the most bogged down part of the application is in culling.  If you are a mastermind and can figure out how to tweak settings to make things go faster, then that is great.  But that does not fit me or I suspect 99% of LR users.  So make it easy on us and make Adobe look like rock stars add a simple Cull module.  Problem solved!

Use the Embedded Preview option when importing and speed is not an issue for the initial cull.

do you know how unbelievably long it would take for Lightroom to analyze all your images for focus?

Why is there no filter options during import? When I have time i rate images in the camera so I directly can start to work on the correct images in LR.

If I take 100 images, rate 10 of them I would to like to import only the 10 images and skip the other 90 image to save time, battery, HD space and so on when I'm at the laptop.

Why isn't this possible? Can't take long time to develop?

Agreed, embedded preview workflow really helps, but it takes some knowledge to know how to use that workflow and I really think a cull module would help make it work without having to understand how to do a particular workflow.

People are already familiar with how to use things like Photo Mechanic to solve the problem, so I think the new module has a better chance.

I've always culled before importing by using the free "Faststone" (Win only). Mark the "ins" by a tag (press backslash as you go through the thumbnails), and ignore the "outs." Then at the top sort only on tags, drag them into a new folder, and import to LR from that folder.

While we can 'star' / rate images on our cameras, we should be able to import ONLY the starred images as it would save a lot of time and a lot of hard drive space. For example - shoot a sports match at 10 frames per second = 2000 images + select & star 40 hero images on camera, therefore should be able to import ONLY these 40 starred images... Instead we have to import 2000 images and then click 'star' rating. This is a waste of time.
There are already sorting options in the import dialog - but the only truely useful one is missing.
PLEASE ADD THIS OPTION - SORRY FOR SHOUTING !!!!
