ACR Autonomous Image Straighten

Tried using ACR autonomous image straighting feature. The image I thought was an easy task for AI. The subject is the Parthenon complex in Centennial Park, in Nashville TN. Once the process was finished and I was back in PS the image did not look straight. Using the Guides in PS I discovered the top A frame where the mythical creatures are housed the platform from Left to Right was off by a substantial amount.

Correction; Since this is a well known structure perhaps have an image db where ACR can connect and use as a refrence point to insure edges are at least at a 90 degrees flat.

Yes, image was corrected using Adaptive Wide Angle Filter

Just a thought.

AI is anything that stops working when you pull out the internet cable. All generative AI is processed on Adobe’s servers. Generative AI is where an algorithm makes “decisions” about actual image content.

Some locally executed algorithms may be based on machine learning, but is not what people generally mean when they say “AI”. They don’t alter actual content.

Most Photoshop functions that have been around more than, say, 5-ish years, when all this started (such as auto straightening) fall outside both these categories.

Not necessarily. Even Generative AI can run locally. Adobe just introduced that for the Remove tool in Photoshop.

Well, OK :-)  But the general distinction still holds: any automated process that alters image content, introducing new elements that were never there in the original, all outside your own control.

That separates it very clearly from things like, say, masking or noise reduction and so on. That’s the ethical great divide.

Not too long ago, someone proudly presented the result of AI upsampling (an owl), to demonstrate how good it was, feathers and all. And it looked impressive, until you looked more closely and saw all the added detail that came out of thin air. There was even a miniature frog, completely out of scale, sitting at the owl’s feet. Where did that come from? That’s what I’m talking about.

Do you mean the Auto straighten button in the ACR Transform panel? That is not using AI. It’s a fairly simple algorithm that looks at the most obvious lines in the image and can easily be fooled by lines that should not be horizontal or vertical.

Thank you for the response. These lines were a ledge which protruded out slightly from the edge. Could not have been any easier to define IMHO. How or where is AI tools defined in ACR/PS?

I’m not sure I understand your question, AI is not ‘defined’ anywhere. Some tools use AI (such as Generative Remove, or Sky Mask), other tools don’t.
