Add “Current & Below” Sampling Option to Mixer Brush for Non-Destructive Retouching

Feature Request: "Current & Below" sampling mode for Mixer Brush Tool

Dear Adobe Team,

I'm a professional Photoshop user working primarily with high-end retouching and compositing. One of the limitations I often face is with the Mixer Brush Tool, which currently lacks the ability to sample using a “Current & Below” mode — like the one available in the Clone Stamp and Healing tools.

This feature would allow the Mixer Brush to sample from the active layer and those beneath it (excluding adjustment or overlay layers above), while painting on a separate empty layer. This is crucial for maintaining a non-destructive workflow, especially when doing precise retouching on skin, hair, or other detailed surface blending.

Right now, using "Sample All Layers" often introduces unwanted data from layers above, which contaminates the color and makes the Mixer Brush unreliable for high-level control.

Suggested functionality:

  • A "Sample" dropdown for Mixer Brush including:

    • Current Layer

    • Current & Below (new)

    • All Layers (existing)

I believe this would be a highly valuable addition for the Photoshop community, especially for retouchers, illustrators, and digital painters. Thank you for considering it!

Best regards,
