Brightness control over generated content

I'm placing a sailboat onto a water scene. The boat is too bright for the amount of sunlight in the scene. I would like to be able to apply controls such as Curves, Exposure, etc. to the sailboat, even if that requires a new rendering.

I must be missing something, because my adjustment layer affects all pixels within the generated layer, including the prior background content that was borrowed to create the new amalgam.

    You can do that easily by clipping the adjustment layer(s) to the underlying pixel layer. Then the adjustment only affects that layer.
